To clarify something, he was a fully qualified captain but there tends to be more captains than there are captain positions so he basically chilled in security for a bit until a position opened up. Which makes this situation so much worse since he was not just a random who got promoted without qualifications.

This disaster did change procedure in the cruise industry. They used to run the evacuation drills in the first 24 hours of a cruise, but now they run the evacuation drills before the ship leaves port. Part of the problem was the panic and no passengers knowing where their muster stations were because they hadn't run the evacuation drill yet.

Also, "the captain goes down with the ship" is kinda accurate. What they really mean is the captain is supposed to be the last one off the ship. It is the price of the power you have as the captain.

Ironically, it wasn't the captain's orders that caused the wreck - it was the incompetency and complacency of the other officers. Everything following the hit, however, is completely his fault.

01:02:00 just remember, one of the victims who die in this, was a 5 year old, and they try to "compesate" that with the minimun amount of money...

4:08 Most people seem to miss that text for some strange reason.
I'm not saying the captain is somehow innocent. But I am still angry that the company and that helmsman got away with it.

Don’t feel too bad lots of people missed the text explaning that it wasn’t a real photograph of the disaster.

40:59 He probably changed clothes in orden to avoid being recognized as the captain.

This is just a real world example that goes to show just because someone has a degree or certified in something, doesn't mean that they aren't an absolute incompetent moron lol

The fact that anyone died from this is completely due to the officers' negligence and incompetence. It was right next to the shore in (relatively) warm waters.

Compare that to the Titanic, the only comparable shipwreck, which sank in the middle of a freezing cold ocean.

Switch the captains around, and I doubt anyone on the Costa Concordia would've died under Captain Smith - he may have been lax with the rules, yes, but not once did he lie about the Titanic's situation, at least not once it became apparent that the ship was sinking, something that took a long time for them to realize.

One captain cared more about the passengers than his reputation, and it shows.

I assumed he changed into the suit because he didn't want everybody to look like a captain when boarding a lifeboat. At best he'd have to deal with awkward questions from unhappy passengers. He could be barred from the boats until everybody else left or he may have faced violence. If he was going to flee like a coward, he would want to do it quietly.

Why he chose a suit instead of something more casual? I don't know. Maybe it was arbitrary. Maybe he didn't have casual clothes. Maybe he thought that if he was only going to save one outfit from the ship, he was going to take the expensive suit that would cost the most to replace.
