"Why would you spend 500 million on the ship itself and then cheap out on the personnel?" Sadly the answer is that the company was being penny wise pound foolish. They wanted to cut costs wherever they could.

"what's the point of house arrest? I don't go out of my home" which is why you are unlikely to commit a crime and get house arrest, people who tend to do crimes usually are outdoor people.

I think playing 'My Heart Will Go On' was done by someone on the staff who couldn't say anything about what was going on but wanted to say 'we're screwed dudes'.

20:46 There is the moment Schettino became the "Easy to Scapegoat Target". Had he not lied to everyone under his responsibility, to the relevant authorities, and to those above him in the company hierarchy, company lawyers could have minimized the impact for him (and the company itself). But lie he did, especially to his superiors, that learnt of the true scope of the emergency from a national news network that was reporting live the accident.

A navigational officer did a react to this. According to him, Captaincies are few and far between. While officers wait for postings to become available, they often take on other positions. Schettino was fully-accredited as a commanding officer of a civilian vessel like cruise ships, which are basically floating cities -- the bigger, the more people they can have aboard at once. Schettino was even a fairly good captain under normal circumstances. But he buckled under pressure. Badly. He probably thought his career was over if he had to admit he had to abandon ship, but it was over anyway, regardless. He should have prioritized saving as many people as possible, and ordered evacuation as soon as the engineer pronounced the ship lost.

Everyone was super-lucky the ship ran aground so it couldn't capsize completely. Swap Costa Concordia with Titanic , situationally, and very few people would have made it to the lifeboats. It's actually super-common for ships to capsize because they're breached on one side. Even Titanic was. But having the watertight doors closed, even though the bulkheads didn't run all the way up so water spilled over to the adjacent compartments, meant the ship was sinking more or less evenly. Even more so because they'd shifted coal to the other side of the ship while putting out a fire. This, and the crew's hard work keeping power and lights on, gave those aboard 2 hours, 45 minutes to try and sort themselves and get to safety, whereas Thomas Andrews told Murdoch and Smith the ship would go down in just one hour. Titanic , by the way, had a whole bunch of safety redundancies, they were just insufficient for the amount of water coming in. The tragedy led to a lot of maritime reforms that were overdue. Her big sister, Olympic also received significant modification, including a second skin all the way around. The youngest sister, Britannic was built larger, to compensate for the second skin. It didn't help save the ship when she struck a mine, however the evacuation was well-done, except for two lifeboat launches that were dispatched without orders, while the ship was still moving because the captain wanted to try to beach her.

If you're curious what happened to steam ships without power, there's the Empress of Ireland , Canada's own 'Titanic tragedy.' She was steaming down the St. Lawrence River when a thick fog came in. The captain decided to basically pull over and stop, especially since he heard the horn of another ship nearby, and thought they'd pull over too. They didn't. The Storstadt has an icebreaker bow, and knifed directly amidship. Despite efforts to hold the ship there, the strong river current pulled Storstadt away and into the fog, allowing a torrent of water into the Empress , right into the boiler room. Some passengers aboard woke up and came up to the deck to see what had happened, but the other ship was already gone. They returned to their cabins, their biggest and last mistake: with the boilers out, the ship was rapidly losing steam pressure, and they could not be relit. Empress 's watertight doors were also operated manually. The crew had drilled endlessly to be able to close them, even in the dark. But they couldn't fight the onrushing water, which caused the ship to list. She lost power, and the interior halls were plunged into the darkness of night. Very few people managed to get to the lifeboats, and some of them were immediately wrecked. Others stood on the hull, watching in horror as trapped people waved their arms through open portholes, hoping to be pulled out. But the portholes were too small. For a moment, it seemed like the ship would stay with something above water, but the hull began to fill again, and it went down. When the Storstadt managed to come back around, all they saw were the people and lifeboats in the water. The ship and other people were already gone.

There are other very bad maritime disasters, like MV Sewol , MV Dona Paz and MV Vector . One of the most famous collisions is probably Andrea Doria and Stockholm . Mostly because it was recorded, and many people were saved. One little girl found herself caught up in the mangled bow of Stockholm . She was okay, but her family was gone. The others I mentioned here weren't so happy.

The sad part is even though the ship cost half a billion dollars to build. Based on all the technical issues, jamming watertight doors, faulty black box, fault in the emergency generator. Et cetera, they probably cut as many corners on the ship as they did on the staff.

Half a billion is a lot, but when the cost to build it right is more like three quarters of a billion, it shows where they cheaped out

This Captain was ship`s captain before joining company but there were no places. So he became a security until there was a vacancy

In my time as a security operations specialist, the biggest problem I dealt with was nepotism and favoratism. Management was filled with personal friends and family of higher ranked staff. The poor treatment of grunts resulted in complacency or outright confrontation. I was targeted when my name got thrown in for the new management position. Suddenly I'm swarmed with twice as many tasks and responsibilities, some of which weren't even related to security.

I was fired for a uniform violation of all things. This was right at the start of the pandemic, and i got infected while caring for my infected mother. Silver lining: turns out I won the genetic lottery and not only did the virus do nothing to me, my body eventually purged it completely.

37:58 actually have a story about a friend of mine who made a military facility have to institute a new rule regarding drills and practice battles. they were told to go hide and not get caught by the search team. but instructors never specified WHERE they had to hide so they went and stayed the night in a hotel in the city nearby. needless to say this wasn’t what they were supposed to do so now there’s a rule stating that you have to hide INSIDE the military facility.
