Watching this brought back memories of my grandfather. He wasn’t rich, but somehow the lights stayed on, the water kept flowing, and nothing around his home ever felt “wasted.” As a kid, I thought it was just old-fashioned living. Now I realize it was something bigger — independence.

Today we pay subscriptions for things our grandparents quietly built with their own hands and knowledge. Somewhere along the way, we stopped learning how things work and started depending on systems we can’t even fix ourselves.

The part that hit me hardest was “quiet is not the same as gone.” Maybe that wisdom is still sitting inside old garages, barns, notebooks, and family stories… just waiting for someone to care enough to learn it again. This video honestly made me want to slow down, pay attention, and reclaim even one small piece of that self-reliance in my own life.

I helped my dad install his own irrigation system for 2 acres of black eyed peas in Mississippi. But we had a nice creek that he pumped the water from. I also helped my dad with building his house that he designed himself. He was an electrician with the FAA so he did his own electrical installation as well. He never had to call a plumber he could do that too.

It’s eye-opening to see how much practical knowledge we’ve lost in just a few generations. We’ve traded 'household sovereignty' for convenience and endless monthly bills. The concept of site integration—making everything on the land work together as one system—is something I definitely want to look into more. Great reminder that we can still reclaim some of that independence today!

In the placement of the mower deck spindles
5 1000 amp, semi truck batteries connected to a 5000 W. Power inverter plugged directly into my outdoor arc. Welder, outlet, you must disconnect the main breaker. From the grid. It powers everything accept for 220 volt, stove, and air conditioning

In rural Suffolk (England) 1972 I installed a wood fired Rayburn cooker with a back boiler and a thermosyphon heating system. A large diameter (25mm) circuit ran from the boiler straight to the topmost radiator then back through a series of radiarors to the back boiler again. Never had to worry about the regular power outages.
