I had two Mk2 Escorts years ago. With age, I now prefer the lines of the Mk1, although they’re both basically the same car.

The 1300GT had a twin choke weber carb, larger valves in the cylinder head, higher compression ratio and a 4 branch exhaust manifold with a different exhaust system over the standard 1300 escort.....the GT also had a close ratio gearbox.

I had a 1300L (59 bhp) that was really nippy. It would happily sit at 80-85, and still return about 38 mpg. Great engines.

    Good to see you back.
I think MK1 is the better looking, but all personal taste.

I had one of these a 1968 2 door version back in the day. 4 branch manifold. It was light metallic blue with black gloss roof. Twin choke Weber. Had several escorts later but this was my first and I loved it !

Mk1 escort... gorgeous! Love that this is a 4 door GT as well.

To be fair, the mk1 and mk2 Escort is definitely the Marina's spirit animal!

P.s. I still have a rear montego door which was in good condition when stored in the garage in 2003... let me know if you're interested!

The rev counter has an adjustment within the instrument sometimes accessible by removing thw panel illumination bulb holder , or by unscrewing the housing to reveal a yellow slotted potentiometer- turn it so the speed corresponds to an accurate tachometer on a timing light or dwell/ tach connected to the coil!👍

Funny - I had a 1300GT exactly that colour (Vermillion Fire), same rostyles, same pinstripe, same interior, so this was a bit of a nostalgic blast from the past for me. I'd pulled this thing from an uncle of one of my mates' garages, covered in dust and full of water where the rust hadn't eaten the floorpan - and gone through it with new hoses, brakes, 205/60x13 BF Goodrich tyres, reconditioned steering rack, fluids, filters and a set of carpets and plenty of sound deadening once I'd patched the floors....although I must admit I started it up and drove it home 8 miles from it's resting place of many years. I put a set of chrome beauty rings on the rostyles, fitted a set of factory MkII Sport spotlights so I could see better on my night time country driving stints, found a number of missing trim pieces and fitted a centre console from a MkII Escort Ghia so I could mount a stereo without putting holes in things. I eventually gave it a BCF731 cam and twin 40mm Dellorto side draught carbs with a set of 4-2-1 extractors and 2" exhaust with low restriction mufflers so she didn't drone but didn't choke either. Magnificent on gravel roads, I loved this little car and did 20k miles in the year I had it before I was forced to sell it to sort out debt that an ex had incurred and left me with. I had the chance to buy it back two years later, but it wasn't the same car to drive any more due to the thrashing it had had by a boy racer or two in the interim, so reluctantly I passed. The last I heard of it, it was parked in a field on a farm about 40 miles from here - painted black with rattle cans and used as a paddock basher to carry tools or feed about on the farm. That was 22 years ago. Nowadays, I'm looking at 20 times what I paid for it to buy another one, so I'm glad I had the chance to own one when I did.

MkI vs MKII - my parents were always of the opinion that the MKI was the better looking, but they eventually owned two MKIIs - including a 9 month old 1980 MkII Escort 1600 Sport in Chrome Yellow. Me? I love them both - the MkI having that beautiful sweep over the back guard like the MKIII Cortina got and it's smart rear end and the MkII with its very understated styling. They drive very similarly too, so I have no real preference....except I'd truly love my old GT back as it was when I owned it.
