Awesome story but I thought he said in his book the original mystery Engine was a 396 if he built in 63 off the 409 it would've been a Z 11 427. I heard that was only in a drag race configuration apparently in a special Chevy Biscane . That could be wrong but I had originally heard there was only about 11 of those engines built. You could build one by stroke in a 409 the trouble is with the 409 I had one and they have a very heavy piston and there said to be reliable to 6000 RPM or less. They are also known for breaking pistons if you don't run the high octane fuel because they will detonate and fire on the wrong side of the piston and break a 2 1/2 inch piece out of the top between the Ringland But now I understand the story of why smoky unit gave Don Garlet's the suburban the hall around his dragsters and said if you're beating them corporate bastards he was off for it was dragging around his dragster with the trailer in the Cadillac according to his story these guys had some of the greatest stories of racing to tell of all time I love it. And thank God for old smoke where would the L 88 427 have been without him ? As far as I'm concerned it was the greatest Engine Chevy ever built you might've had to build it from Parts from the Chevy power manual but when you hear one fire up you'll know what you're dealing with there's one on YouTube go listen to it start sounds awesome should be on an alarm clock sound lol

As Richard Pettey said, "if you win, make it look like you just managed to win, not by much. If you cheat, cheat neat." He had this gadget that squirted oil on the exhaust manifolds with two laps to go so it looked like you were about to blow and finish conveniently in the infield. Nascar would not be bothered to inspect a blown motor.

They showed the cutaway of a 348 the mystery engine has conventional combustion chambers in the head. AI is something bullshit

That engine had a similar design like the DeSoto staggered valve engine and the 318 Poly or Semi Hemi engine . Plenty of power but it wouldn't last a 500 mile race . Named the Nickel Rocket because it was fast but didn't last . This was what led Chrysler to devolip thr 426 Race Hemi and Ford to create the 427 High Riser for the 1964 season .
