To clarify he wasn't in prison for 3 years, he just was barred from boxing while fighting his trial to avoid jailtime.

When he returned, he no longer had the same resistance, he could no longer dance 15 rounds. That created problems for him in the beginning, but starting from the match with Foreman, he started to defend the first rounds, giving up a few rounds and then coming back towards the end. Anyway, even being on defense, he managed to steal some more rounds, because he blocks well and scores from time to time.
It is worth watching the entire matches with Cleveland Williams and George Foreman.

He lost 5 fights. Frazier and Norton (but won twice on both after that) before he learned to manage his reduced resistance.
Leon Spinks, when he was 36 and not trained. He came back and won the rematch. He retired as champion, but came back again after 2 years and lost two matches (he was slower, and Parkinson's disease already started but he does not know yet).
However prime Ali, until 1967 can be considered the most formidable boxer of all time. When he returned after 1970, he was no longer the same, but after adapting his tactics, he managed to defeat all his opponents.
