Watching and hearing her daughter say she didn’t want mommy to go because she just wanted her to stay around the house was heartbreaking 💔

Imagine how that backup teacher must have felt, she trained with all of them and became close friends. She also knew exactly what was supposed to happen and was probably one of the first spectators to realise something went wrong. I can't imagine whether she feels lucky or survivors guilt considering she could have very well been on that shuttle...

I feel badly for the gentleman who did everything he could to try to stop the launch because he knew the o-rings were a problem. They just wouldn’t listen to him, but he knew.

Barbara Morgan (backup teacher) went on to become an Astronaut on the STS-118 in August 2007 and essentially became the first Teacher in space, the irony of that is incredible.

Morgan was initially scheduled to fly on the STS-118 mission on Space Shuttle Columbia in November 2004. During the disaster that destroyed Columbia in February 2003, she was aboard a training chase plane which was following the shuttle as it prepared to land. As a result of the disaster, STS-118 was delayed until 2007 and was moved to Endeavour.

This amazing soul was meant to be here, to even want to go ahead after all this what a Brave woman.

When she speaks with such enthusiasm and clarity, it becomes clear to me that no one was more perfect than her for this journey

This was completely preventable. The engineers had been warning them about the O rings burning thru at cold temperatures for ages and they took no notice. They were determined to launch. They had gotten away with it time and time again but this time their luck ran out and they killed 7 people and changed their families and friends lives for ever. RIP

I understand why, but I think it's a shame that Christa McAuliffe's death overshadowed that of the rest of the crew. They all had interesting stories and families they left behind. Judy Resnick, for example, was the first Jewish woman in space. Ron McNair battled discrimination to get into NASA, and was the first person to play a musical instrument in space (he snuck a saxophone onto a previous flight). The Adam Higginbotham book is a must read!

I had Christa McAuliffe as a teacher in junior high school in Maryland in 1972. She truly was the best teacher I ever had. Genuinely enjoyed her job and would do anything for her students to help them succeed. I will never forget her. I have been to the Kennedy Space Center Forever Remered Tribute Room in memory of Challenger and Columbia astronauts.I met her mother, Grace Corrigan, when she went on a book signing tour for her book A Journal for Christa. We had a heart-felt conversation and I let her know that her daughter was a big influence in my life. Will always remember the astronauts.

A big portion that this video leaves out is that this launch was in part motivated by greed. It had been delayed multiple times due to the freezing temps, but NASA had been warned by their engineers multiple times over the fragility of the o ring systems in cold temperatures. Since launches were partially paid for with payloads, the companies that had a monetary interest in getting to space pressured things to move along the way they did even with all the risk. It was incredibly unfortunate and completely preventable.

"There will be one body but 10 souls I'm taking with me" is such an eerie statement.

There's an elementary school, middle school and high school all named after Ronald McNair here in Atlanta, the sole Black astronaut that day. May he and all the crew rest peacefully ❤
