As someone who’s currently doing drugs because of the shame…it’s so incredibly difficult to look at myself in the mirror and not see “worthless” “ugly” “lazy” “unfulfilled” “Stupid” “hideous” “loser” etc. Existence itself became some form of punishment for being born so worthless.

My very existence is a reminder of my shame. Me being here, walking and breathing is a constant reminder of my shame and it’s difficult to get out of because it’s me. I am the shame.

The drugs help disassociate. It helps remove myself from my body so I don’t have to drag that pile of crap (me) everywhere I go.

I get to not think about myself and my shortcomings and failures and all the things I did wrong and all the abuse I suffered and all the fear I have in me. It helps me exist without experiencing the pain of living even though it’s killing me little by little everyday.

I say that to say, you didn’t fail your brother and you’re not a hypocrite. You’re doing your best with what you yourself have and can put out and it’s up to whoever is receptive to take it and run with it and pass it forward to the next person.

The issue of shame is so incredibly deeply rooted that even if you did have the necessary resources to help him get in a better place, there’s still a chance things would’ve ended up the same way and then you would’ve found something else to blame yourself on because he didn’t make it.

I don’t know you personally and I just stumbled across your videos today but I’m sure you just being you and loving your brother despite his situation and what he was getting himself into, was more than enough. A little glimmer of light among the shadows of self-hatred and pain and when the darkness around is so thick, the smallest light shines really bright. So I’m sure you were the brightest light in his darkness.

He’s in God’s arms now ❤ 🕊️

P.S I’m sorry in advance if my comment upset you. I’m not really good with words.

You did not fail him. In his unfairly short time on this planet, he got to experience your light. An impression that will remain beyond this existence. Two souls, forever intertwined. I am so sorry Dasia. I hope you are held deeply through this, just as you hold others. Sending you all the love.

    Hello Dasia.
I am a psychologist from Spain and I am writing this with Google Translate because my English is not very good.
It's been two months since you posted this video (I came across it through one of your learn to skate quad videos), so I don't know how you feel now.
I don't want to make the mistake of giving you cheap advice on how to deal with grief. The loss of someone AS important as your brother, with all that he meant, is not something to be taken lightly.
I just want you to know that while I cannot even imagine the pain you are in, I am aware of your suffering and I want to thank you for the wonderful gift of your testimony.
I really like your way of seeing life and the advice you give. In fact, they are very similar to what I myself usually say to my patients in my clinic. You have infinite intuition. Thank you.
I don't know if anyone else will see this comment, but please listen to Dasia.
And, Dasia, please continue with your vital mission. What you do is wonderful and essential.
Thank you.

You are so strong Dasia. Even in these moments, when you feel vulnerable and low, THATS STRENGTH! Your message rings to thousands now, and I know it will ring true to millions later. You’re an inspiration. Sending you love ❤️

This is an awful awful grief. I hope he is finally free from the shame and weight he carried and desperately wanted relief from. Sometimes all the love and care in the world just isn’t enough and as someone who also consistently pours into a mentally-ill person, I have to tell you his death is not your fault no matter how much it feels like it is. Thank you for such a meaningful and vulnerable message while you’re in the midst of all of this. I think it could save lives. Today I will think of Elliot, and I will go outside and do in his honor.

This is one of the most powerful messages. 🙏🏾 Thank you. I wish I had more to say but there’s no words that can truly express the empathy, compassion, motivation and bitter sweet feelings of gratitude and longing. 3 years later here you are. Like a voice in the ocean

Holding back tears in the cubicle of my dead end job right now. I came across your Tragic Optimist video today and it told me a lot of things that I really needed to hear. I am so inspired by your mindset and resilience and I hope I’ll be able to pay it forward to others. Your family must be so proud of you❤️

You will never know what this moment with "you" has done for me. A father that lost his only son, after he survived being a victim of gun violent, and being failed by those who purport to be in the "Mental Health" field. THANK YOU DEAR HEART. I ROCK WITH YOU!

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. I have struggled with the pain of my childhood physical, sexual, emotional abuse from many people. At age 50 I've finally faced my demons and am healing. Shame is such a tricky demon, but I've started skating and watching you is helping unlock the freedom and the JOY of flying through the air. And yes, I fall. I don't heal as quickly as I used to. I'm not strong- but I'm getting there. I just want to tell people that you are right- you never know what the future holds and you CAN experience something different and new. I wish I could give you a little of what you are giving me. You shine. You enlighten. You ROCK
