I’ve worked in family businesses and this is exactly why they implode. Loyalty beats competence every time until everything collapses.

My friend's Italian father ran a wildly successful ophthalmology lab for decades, even doing rush work for national chains. He was known for doing precise, fast, and dependable work. When he retired, he gave the business to his only son, despite that his oldest daughter had been essentially running the business for the past decade. She quit immediately and became a lab manager at a national chain.
The son ran it into the ground within 6 months. He sold off equipment that he thought was too old, because it looked ugly, and bought cheap crap that barely functioned.

He didn’t realize his brother would’ve pulled the same criminal actions, even if he would’ve remained with the company

‘Creative accounting” 😂 that’s another word for embezzlement

Fully expected dear old dad's new wife to have gotten her claws into Vincent - that that's where the money was really going.

Family business is always a challenge because it is unusual for multiple progeny to either be interested or qualified to take over.

In most cases, it’s just better to sell the viable business. I owned my own Medicare Certified Surgical Center as a foot and ankle surgeon.

My daughter was not interested in medicine. She became an electrical engineer instead. No problem. We just sold my business when ready to retire.

She will eventually just inherit the proceeds. No drama. No hurt feelings. She did what she wants to do. So did I. We have a wonderful relationship.

Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Retired surgeon

My favorite character in this story is the author's mom. She may be the first parent in these stories I've seen to not only call out favoritism BS, but straight up encourage the underappreciated child to be better than what their idiot sibling pretends to be. W Mama!

This story feels like a movie. I wonder if you ever tried to confront your dad or had a conversation with him before all of this went down?

Sounds to me like Vincent had a perfect understanding of how the corporate world works - overcharge everything and rip everyone off at every opportunity. He just didn't know how to do it without getting caught.

I never would have worked for my father. I would have gone to the competition. If he wanted to treat me the way he did, as a kid, I would not have forgotten that, and he would be made to regret it when I made another business far more successful than he could ever make it. My brother can swoop in and take over his business, all he wanted, but the result would be the same: I would put my father's business 6 ft under.

Enzo was a fool to have gone to work for daddy. At least mom wasn't another enabler.
