We saved all $4k from our tax return and put it straight in our savings for a down payment for a home! We have 45k saved up

I told my pops yesterday I've been serious about paying off debt (around 2k a month) and afterwards I plan to buy a 5-7k Honda Civic off Facebook marketplace in cash as my current car is going downhill. The response I received was "son, you're young, work a decent job, and can afford a monthly payment on a nice car." That my friends is bad financial advice from a parent who just heard that their child is serious about getting out of debt, especially from one who just had to push back his retirement a year so he could finish paying off a 3rd car that he couldn't afford and didn't need. Neither of my parents have ever saved money in their lives nor taught any of their kids about smart finances. They did what they could and raised 4 kids but I refuse to go down the same path. I don't plan to pay off debt just to enter into more debt afterwards.

Buy stuff that will provide utility. Took me until my late 20s to understand this. Don't buy for the high, buy for a purpose.

My children have always had their own wallets at like 4 years old and every time we went somewhere I would make them pay for the lollipop they want. They got an allowance ( like 5 $). I never had a screaming child asking for something in the store because I would always say yes to whatever they wanted if they had the money to spend. It really made them think about what they truly wanted. But as a parent if they didn’t have the money, I wouldn’t give them the extra quarter they needed. Instead I would help them find alternatives that are in their budget. It’s hard to say NO to your kids especially when they literally only need a few Pennies but you have to follow through everything you say or they will always look for loopholes. They may not like you very much at times but that’s ok you do it out of love and when they are grown they will thank you for being stricked and teaching them cause it will be very beneficial to their future.

My favorite thing about people complaining about the cost of things in general and how much they are struggling seem to leave out little tidbits of information. Such as 4x a week doordash/never cooking. $9 starbucks every day. Buying multiple $60-70 video games. $80 for nail salon. The $200 of alcohol on the weekends. All the partying/vacations. Relying on other people for literally EVERYTHING instead of developing their own skills (building/repairing/cooking/etc). 10 pairs of shoes. Clothes they never wear. And a million others.

Then they have to audacity to complain about everything. Are things expensive? Yes. Do you spend tons of your money on utter crap? Also yes.

I had about 20k in savings and then I lost my job and it took me around 3 months to get a new one, I’ve about 7k left and I couldn’t tell you how happy I am that I actually didn’t buy that big suv that I really wanted because those 20k would’ve been the down payment and I’d have been in a lot of trouble during those months

Young people (and older people like me) should be so thankful for the amount of free information online now! My parents knew NOTHING and all their kids knew NOTHING, we weren't around people with good financial lives. It's so depressing because it has ruined my life but I am not dead yet so I am trying to correct course. It is so difficult and depressing but I decided to focus on positive financial stories, not the flashy stuff but the solid real life people and those I meet in person that have made great choices

My secret is I've never paid a cent in interest on anything outside a car or home loan. By all means, use them wisely. But never ever ever carry that credit card balance over.

I have not been to a restaurant in about 4 years. I know avocado toast is a meme but making your own food really does save THOUSANDS per year.
