The reason Doc said 'this is funny' is due to his firmly held belief he would die with his boots on in a gunfight rather than quietly on a bed. Wyatt Earp said Doc holiday was the fastest gun he ever saw.

Val kilmer delivered one of the best performances ever to be recorded on film in my opinion

And Charleton Heston, a true Hollywood STAR for decades, anyone else recognize him in this?

Throughout the movie Doc never shows his draw to anyone. That is the smart thing to do. Ringo showed Doc his draw at the bar trying to show off.

I seriously recommend that you screen "Open Range" staring Keven Costner and Robert Duvall.

When Doc is on his death bed he says, "This is funny." looking down at his feet, because gunfighters always die with their boots on. Which is how he expected himself to die, not in a comfy hospital bed.
