The Vasa | The Warship That Sank After 1,300 Metres

North of the harbour the water is shallow enough to wade, and a ship lay on the bottom for three hundred and thirty three years because she was built to a specification nobody would argue with. The Vasa sailed about a thousand three hundred metres on her first voyage in sixteen twenty eight, heeled in a gust, took the Baltic through thirty open gun ports cut too close to the waterline, and went down inside Stockholm's own harbour with about a hundred and fifty people aboard. Between thirty and fifty of them died, in water the men on the shore could have swum out to. The ship had already failed a stability test. Thirty men running side to side across the deck in January had rolled her so hard that the officer in charge stopped the exercise and said the men had all died if she went over. Nobody wrote it down. Nobody told the king, whose own order for a second deck of heavy guns on a hull drawn for one was the reason she was unstable. Seven months later she sailed anyway. The inquest that autumn heard the evidence and concluded that the ship was built to the royal specification by men following orders. Nobody was punished. The most powerful man in Sweden had ordered the thing that killed his own subjects, and the paperwork was arranged so it could not be said out loud. Then the chemistry. The Vasa survived where every wooden wreck of her age is gone, because the Baltic is too cold and too brackish for the shipworm that eats hulls in every other sea. She filled with sediment, was found in nineteen fifty six by an amateur researcher working from a hunch and a sounding line, and came up in nineteen sixty one.
