As a young saxophonist, I was told to listen to Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else". Worked for me.

I'm a giant Coltrane fanboy, but Mingus's "Black Saint and The Sinner Lady" is impressive and made a huge impact on me. It's like what Hendrix would do if he played jazz. What a ride.

I personally believe that Latin jazz and the bosa nova movement were important also. Many jazz artists delved into that scene.

Kind of Blue, Giant Steps, Time Out. And as a dark horse, The Nightfly. The real cool Jazz starter collection.

Almost impossible to just name 10…Always leaving someone out. The history of jazz is along with baseball and an incredible Constitution that the USA will be remembered for 1000 years from now. And lest we not forget today’s incredible jazz musicians who have kept Jazz alive and well. Harry Allen, Scott Hamilton, Kenny Barron, Bill Charlap, Houston Person and the recently departed Russell Malone, Roy Hargrove, Jim Rotondi, George Wein…and of course the great Marsalis family from Ellis to Wynton. Incredible musicians who have worked so hard that Jazz would remain so special to all of us who love one of the great unifiers in the World….Music.

I think it's criminal that you left Monk off this list. He's the most important artist that connects the bones of jazz to all that it could become. And it's impossible to understand jazz without understanding Monk.

Brubeck’s Time Out & Coltrane’s Giant Steps for sure belongs on this list! Coltrane’s A Love Supreme deserves mention!

I would definitely mention Keith Jarrett. His solo improvisations are unique and some of the longer pieces are unbelievable in their improvisation. The Köln concert is a must. If you want to stretch a little to the other side of the pond I could imagine having Esbjorn Svensson Trio in there.

Take Five is the best Jazz song. As a Metal dude, even I knew that tune.  Timeless.
