I think it’s obscene to not feed your servants well. They do all the work to make you look good, but they received the poorest food

The Junior staff who worked the hardest ate the least... Particularly the scullery maid and the chimney sweeps, Junior maids who were up at 5am to get the fires going, rooms aired and cleaned, hot water up and down stairs..
Classism 😢 sexism too.
The young junior women got significantly less when they worked longer hours and worked harder.
The Senior staff oversaw everything. They didn't actually clean or wash a dish, lug up a bucket of coal or water.
Rural workers atleast got fresh air, good food and id suggest a slightly higher standard of living compared to the smog filled cities where food was adulterated and everything was more expensive.

Not all houses were run like this. Many estates had all staff eating together, including the head butler.

I think all servants should have what the family has!

If the daily diet of servants in the Victorian era was this limited and repetitive, does that reflect necessity—or a system that quietly reinforced class divisions through something as basic as food, thanks

I think it would be cool if you did a video on following a family for a week, or possibly an unmarried pregnant woman. Just a thought! I've seen documentaries where they followed a woman from the workhouse records but never really got deep into who they were and what happened to them.

I just finished a major biography of Beethoven and the most shocking thing for me is what medicine and hospitals were like in the late 18th and the first 30 years of the 19th century. It was absolutely barbaric.

If interested in the book, write me at this e-mail address.
