The answer is simple: they are the villains. The cyberpunk dystopia is actually pretty cozy if you´re a corpo owner.

First green, then red, now yellow. What is this? A traffic light?

Someone once tweeted something to the effect of, "Their main takeaway is that the dystopia-making companies in Black Mirror look pretty rich"

i see it as this: if you read 1984 and imagine yourself as a civilian, it’s a terrifying warning. if you read 1984 and imagine yourself as big brother, it’s an aspirational story about everything you’ve ever wanted.

It's like how they say you can't make an anti-war movie because if you make it boring no one will read/watch it.

They’re building bunkers. They know what they’re doing.

Like being confronted with the morality of slavery. Most conclude "it's wrong for one human being to own another, it needs to end". There'd be a minority though, who'd conclude "be the master, not the slave".

Something regarding Paul as not being aspirational: PAUL AGREES. Like 2/3rds of the book is him trying to have his revenge cake and not eat the horrible violence and bloodshed. He ends the book having thoroughly chosen revenge, and mourning the loss of good friends into heartless zealots as the future tumbles into mass bloodshed and destruction as he becomes everything he and his beloved father ever hated. For a very dense, political book with a lot of machinations and much more specific themes or variations that explore the effects of power in all its forms, Frank really, really, really tried to make the overarching theme of 'down the road of the great man philosophy, no matter what form, lies nothing but reams of human misery' clearer than air.

“Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

Nearly all tech ceos are basically the main character of Dune, they get told the future that will happen to them so they can avoid it, instead they believe they can do everything right anyways, falling into the trap of becoming the evil itself they were warned about. Then when they realise they are evil, they go full on with it because it makes them feel better.
