For anyone watching this reaction and wondering who Thompson is and why these songs mean so much to Croatians, here is some context.

Marko Perković Thompson is a Croatian singer who became known during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. He comes from the village of Čavoglave, and his nickname “Thompson” came from the American Thompson submachine gun that he received as a Croatian volunteer at the beginning of the war. His first major wartime song, “Bojna Čavoglave,” came from that experience.

To understand Thompson, you also have to understand what happened to Croatia.

In 1991, Yugoslavia was breaking apart. Croatia declared independence on June 25, 1991. A large part of the Serb population in Croatia rejected the authority of the newly independent Croatian state, and an armed rebellion began. The Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), together with Serb forces in Croatia, became directly involved in the fighting. Large parts of Croatian territory were occupied, and cities such as Vukovar were besieged and devastated. Dubrovnik was also shelled. The war continued until 1995, when Croatia regained most of the occupied territory through military operations; Eastern Slavonia was subsequently returned to Croatian control peacefully under UN administration in 1998.

This history is extremely important when listening to Thompson. For many Croatians, his wartime songs are connected with defending their homes, independence, family, comrades and the country they were fighting to establish. At the same time, Thompson's music and some of the symbols associated with his performances are politically and historically controversial, particularly because of references that critics connect with the WWII-era Ustaša regime. Thompson rejects the interpretation that his wartime songs glorify that regime and says that his songs should be understood in the context of the Croatian War of Independence.

“Dolazak Hrvata” (“The Arrival of the Croats”) takes the story much further back — into the legendary origins of the Croatian people. It is not a literal history lesson, but a poetic and spiritual story about the arrival of the Croats, their homeland, faith, identity and the responsibility to protect the land they call home.

And then there was the concert at Zagreb's Hippodrome on July 5, 2025.

Around 504,000 people attended according to the organizers, and the event was described by HRT as the largest one-evening paid-ticket concert in music history. The Hippodrome became a sea of people singing Croatian songs about history, faith, family, love, war, sacrifice and homeland.

The setlist was almost a musical journey through Croatian history and identity:

• Ustani iz sjene — rising from darkness and finding strength.

• Ravnoteža — the struggle to find balance between different forces and choices in life.

• Dolazak Hrvata — the legendary arrival of the Croats and their connection with their homeland.

• Duh ratnika — courage, perseverance and the spirit of a warrior.

• Kletva kralja Zvonimira — the legend surrounding King Zvonimir and Croatia's historical destiny.

• Bosna — attachment to Bosnia and its Croatian historical and cultural connection.

• E, moj narode — a message to the Croatian people about identity, unity and sacrifice.

• Neka ni'ko ne dira u moj mali dio svemira — defending one's own little world: home, family, freedom and everything precious in life.

• Početak — beginnings and entering a new chapter.

• Slike Bleiburga — remembrance of Bleiburg and the suffering and deaths connected with the aftermath of World War II.

• Maranatha — a Christian prayer and invocation meaning “Come, Lord.”

• Neću izdat ja — loyalty to one's beliefs, people, faith and homeland.

• Gospin dom — devotion to the Virgin Mary and the idea of Croatia under her protection.

• Zaustavi se vjetre — memories, emotions and the passing of time.

• Sine moj — a parent's love, protection and hopes for a son.

• Ratnici svjetla — “Warriors of Light,” with light representing goodness, faith and hope.

• Diva Grabovčeva — the story of a young woman from Herzegovina who became a symbol of faith, purity and resistance.

• Samo je ljubav tajna dvaju svjetova — love connecting two people and overcoming the distance between their worlds.

• Moj dida i ja — a grandfather, family roots, memories and the bond between generations.

• Nepročitano pismo — an unread letter, separation and words that were never expressed.

• Kralj Tomislav — King Tomislav and the beginnings of Croatian statehood.

• Oluja — Croatia's 1995 military operation and the experience of liberation and victory after years of occupation and war.

• Bojna Čavoglave — one of Thompson's defining wartime songs, born out of the Croatian War of Independence and the defense of his home region.

• Ne varaj me — betrayal, broken trust and personal heartbreak.

• Ako ne znaš šta je bilo — remembering the past and asking younger generations to learn what happened during Croatia's difficult road to independence.

• Geni kameni — ancestry, Croatian identity and the idea that heritage and character are carried through generations.

• Moj Ivane — longing, separation and the pain of losing or being separated from someone you love.

• Iza devet sela — nostalgia, love and longing for a distant home.

• Devedeset neke — memories of the turbulent 1990s and the generation that lived through those years.

• Lijepa li si — a celebration of Croatia, its regions, people, beauty and homeland.

So when you hear “Dolazak Hrvata,” you are hearing the beginning of the story. Then the concert moves through kings and history, Christianity and faith, family and generations, the Homeland War, sacrifice, love, memory and finally modern Croatia.

For someone outside Croatia, the songs may sound simply patriotic. But for many Croatians, they carry memories of a country that went through the breakup of Yugoslavia, war, occupation, loss and the struggle for independence.

That is the context behind Thompson — and that is why hundreds of thousands of people came together at the Hippodrome to sing these songs together.

It is not necessary to agree with every political or historical interpretation surrounding Thompson to understand why his music has such a powerful emotional meaning for a large part of the Croatian audience.
