Catelyn's first food description does benefit the story! The food she gets is kind of normal, just a bit extra. She got more than she asked for, which says she probably didn't ask for much, that gives you a decent idea where her head is at. Also, the fact she was given more than she asked for tells you the people serving her care about her a bit, what with her son probably being dead soon, and want to cheer her up with blackberry preserves.

We can contrast it with the next meal from Bran, which is more like party food. They're celebrating his revival. Or not because that would have been like a fortnight ago, oh well.

RE: how glidus should eat TWOW - obviously he should eat it whole, without steel but instead tearing it apart with tooth and nail, dressed as an aspiring khalessi as Khalt Shift X looks on with a simmeringly powerful mix of pride, fear and lust

I like how according to this tier list. Fish Stew from Theon II is somehow worse then a literal raw Horses heart.

I would argue that when Sandor describes his own face being melted as being “like a nice juicy mutton chop” counts as a food description.

To Glidus, technically, all of Winds of Winter is a food description.

The Catelyn breakfeast is great from a story perspective. Catelyn had refused to care of herself while she sat at Bran's side, never eating properly. After almost dying to the assassin she finally gets the resolve to live again and realises that she has been neglecting herself, Robb and everyone else.
When she asks for breakfast everyone is so happy and reliefed about it that they go over the top, cause they care. She temporarily developed a eating disorder out of depression.

Bran sending "sweets to Hodor and Old Nan, for no reason but he loved them" at the feast makes me so emotional ngl. Some of George's finest writing on show there

I found that none of asoiaf's detailed food descriptions compare to being immersed in one of the ice-cold northern chapters, and reading the words "A hot meal".
