There&apos;s a thing in military command where subordinate officers are <b>supposed</b> to be given the commander&apos;s intention along with their orders, so that they can know how to respond to unexpected developments in a way that serves the overall battle plan. In the pre-radio days of written orders being sent by courier, this was even more important, since subordinate officers might have to operate for extended periods on their own judgement, without being able to consult their commander - like Edmure was at the mill. <br><br>The best historical commanders had a great grasp of this. Alexander the Great famously held pre-battle conferences while on the march, where he explained his plan in detail to all his officers, and had them memorize what amounted to a flowchart of orders - &quot;if X happens, do Y&quot; for a bunch of contingencies. Whereas many failed operations have been the result of vague or confusing orders being passed down to officers who then acted in a way that was different from what the commander really wanted. <br><br>That latter case is what we see with the mill. Robb gives Edmure a specific order that he expects to be followed, but doesn&apos;t tell him anything about the intentions of the overall plan or how to respond to unexpected situations. So when Edmure seizes upon an opportunity and tries to destroy Gregor&apos;s force, he really has no way to know that he&apos;s going against Robb&apos;s plan, because Robb didn&apos;t do a good job of issuing orders. I think a major point of Robb&apos;s story is that he&apos;s this storybook hero at first glance, but he&apos;s actually too inexperienced and impetuous to handle the more mundane tasks of a leader, and that is what undoes him.

  Bowen freaking out about having to kill Jon immediately parallels the assassination of Caesar again because that is basically what happened with the conspiracy. They wanted to wait and plan but Caesar revealed that he was about to go on campaign so they only had a few days to decide when and where to do it.
