  Im an engineer in oil production.  You did pretty good with nothing and learned important things. One thing that I think you may have misunderstood though is the pressure at the mud swivel. The pressure kept getting higher because of the hydrostatic pressure in the well. As the well got deeper it had to push up against a higher column of fluid and that pressure is seen at the swivel. For anyone who might repeat this is good to have a gauge there. Second the mud. It weighs more per gallon as you make the mud thicker making the pressure higher, which decreases the flow which decreases pushing mud back up. There's a lot of math in determining the best mud viscosity but plenty of online calculators to use. The key things to remember is the deeper you go and the thicker the mud the higher the pressure and it doesn't take long to build up A LOT of pressure. Honestly though it's crazy someone pulled this off. Mad props. It's forced me to think how I would improve it because it's something I never would have thought to do. If there aren't too many rocks or roots I would attempt to use water pressure to cut the soil rather than rotation. Same rig but at the end have some pressure washer nozzles and use a gas powered pressure washer and use Dawn liquid detergent to foam the cuttings to the surface while keeping hydrostatic pressures low.

  After 37 years in the oil patch I have seen a lot of wells drilled, you two can be very proud of what you have accomplished. As an off grid homesteader here in BC, I wish you all the best, seeing young folks such as your selves getting out there and just doing it thrills me to no end. Be well and thanks for the vid.

  I am a retired driller who worked in the water well, environmental, and geotechnical field as well as managing and working in well drilling supply industry for over 40 years, it is amazing what you got done there, not perfect but I actually didn’t have much faith when you started but your creativity and perseverance carried you through, you guys did an amazing job.

  Mr Davis ( a retired driller) and I drilled four wells with a similar rig in the 80s. We used schedule 80 or Schedule 120 pipe, bought the swivel from an oilfield supply, and made our bits with used road grader blades. We used a hand winch from a boat trailer.<br> &nbsp; Otherwise just like yours.<br> &nbsp; Great Job !

  I know this is a year late but I have drilled several wells here in south Mississippi over the years, some as deep as 160 ft., using a deep rock drilling rig, It came with a 10ft tall frame, a 3/4 hp 2 cycle post hole &nbsp;drill engine and 50ft of 3/4 pipe for drill rod, 2 bits and a swivel for the water. I can say that what you did is very smart. That&apos;s for posting, sure brought back a lot of memories!

  An older gentleman once said to me &quot; necessity is the hallmark of invention&quot;, and to be honest with what you two build for a fraction of the cost just goes to prove that you were able to make a shallow rig that worked.<br>Yes as you said you would have done things differently, but everyone has 20/20 vision in hindsight of how to do things differently after the fact. But you both have proven that nothing is impossible if your able to find a way to do things 😊😊😊.
