I still have this module from my childhood. Ran it a couple of times. 😊 Very, unique.

This takes me back to much happier times; my best friend and I adventured through this. Magic Mouth is such a classic spell/effect for me! I still remember the wonders of the abandoned tower and trying to piece together what had befallen the two heroes. Then I discovered that there had been Melissa, and it was, as the French say, 'cherchez la femme'. My friend passed away unexpectedly five years ago (RIP, Wild Bill!), so the bittersweet nostalgia is even greater now.

As an experienced DM, I find B1 a much greater resource than I did when I first encountered it back in the early ‘80’s.

Back then my fledgling DM self didn’t know what to do with all those empty rooms. Now O see it as a blank canvas on which to paint a masterpiece.

Possibly my favorite part of this adventure is the back of the book where they give you a bunch of names and character stats. That list of names would have come in handy when I ran B2!

Hi Bill, You took me way back down memory lane with this video. In Search if the Unknown was my very first exposure to D&D way back in 1979. It was my 13th birthday and I received a box of lead, yes lead, fantasy miniatures as a present from my parents because they knew I liked to paint toy soldiers. I showed them to my friends the next day and one of them, Dave, remarked, " Hey! those are for Dungeons and Dragons! The rest of us were like "what's dungeons and dragons?", we had never heard of it. Dave went on to describe how he watches his older brother and his friends play it every week. There's rule books and maps and monsters you fight and dungeons you explore and you role lots of weird looking dice and move your character that you name and create around on this huge map that gets revealed by section by section by the Dungeon Master on the kitchen table using Legos and Lincoln logs and the like, as you explore it. It sounded amazing to us so I went to work painting all of the characters as fast as I could and Dave became our very first DM and this module was the first one we ever ran. I'm almost 60 now and haven't played D&D in years. My memory isn't what it used to be and I have a hard time remembering what I ate for lunch yesterday but you are 100% correct about this adventure. I remember every detail about playing through it as if it were yesterday. It definitely holds a special place in my heart because getting together with my friends over Dave's house every Friday evening, sitting together around his kitchen table, Dave's mom asking us if we wanted any drinks and snacks and then playing this game that involved our imaginations like no other game before it ever did til like 10 or 11 at night is one of the best memories of my childhood. Thank you for bringing this special time for me back from the past. 👍

B1 was "unfinished" because it was meant to be. It was intended to be a "teaching" module, since it came with the new game and the DM's needed direction for what was a new game at the time. I actually found it fun to key my own version of the dungeon (which made it uniquely mine). This was the point. It may not have been as good as B2 that came later, but I still think it accomplished its mission, and it's still one I'd run today.

I do share your love for B1 Bill. Like you, the first two things which come to mind are the Pool Room and Magic Mouths. For me, the Wizard’s chambers also resonate.

My very first adventure in 1978!! I still take folks through it and it is different every time. The players make the story, I just provide the backdrop. And B1 has a lot of backdrop for the players to build on.

So glad to have you back

I love B1. I'm finding newer players actually like all of the gonzo things that happen in dungeons like this.

I've run b1 a half dozen times. My favorite module ever, because the map itself and the room contents are awesome, even before you stock the dungeon. I will definitely be running it in Shadowdark.
