President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to the National Palace to begin a new phase of cooperation between the two countries. This is more than just a diplomatic visit. Mexico and South Korea agreed on the Mexico-Korea Action Plan 2026-2030, a roadmap that aims to combine their industrial, technological, and commercial capabilities over the next four years. 📣 Excellent News! During the meeting, 17 memoranda of understanding were signed in areas such as the economy, finance, science, technology, agriculture, education, tourism, culture, intellectual property, and security. South Korea will contribute its expertise in technology, artificial intelligence, electromobility, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, while Mexico seeks to leverage its strategic location, industrial capacity, and connections to North and Latin American markets. One of the agreements establishes a $100 million financing scheme to support Mexican and Korean companies operating in Mexico, particularly in their supply chains. Cooperation will also be strengthened to combat counterfeit and illicit goods entering through customs. A session will be held before the end of the year to identify counterfeit Korean products, and during the coming year, both countries will work to prevent them from reaching the Mexican market. The alliance also extends to strategic sectors for the future. Mexico and Korea will collaborate on artificial intelligence, the digital economy, electric vehicles, science, higher education, and aerospace technology. They even agreed to promote joint projects in satellites, research, and technological production. In defense, South Korea could participate in the modernization of the Mexican Armed Forces through training, research, and technology transfer, with the potential to develop local production and open access to new markets. But the relationship will not be limited to business. Mexico and Korea will also expand their cultural and educational exchanges. Plans are underway to establish a Korean Cultural Center in Mexico and a Mexican House in South Korea, in addition to promoting cooperation in music, film, gastronomy, beauty, and digital content. And for K-pop fans, the president announced that BTS's visit to Mexico in 2027 is being considered, along with the performances of other groups and the creation of new spaces for Korean culture in the country. After 64 years of diplomatic relations, Mexico and South Korea are seeking to move beyond a trade relationship to a deeper partnership: one encompassing technology, jobs, investment, security, education, and culture. Two countries separated by the ocean, but united by a shared opportunity: to grow, innovate, and build new alliances. Mexico is not isolating itself; Mexico is connecting, and Mexico is moving forward.
