Canada's deadliest train accident was the St-Hilaire train disaster on June 29, 1864, which resulted in an estimated 99 deaths.

I’ll also add that if the Train Dispatcher & Engineer had not complied with the Trainmaster’s instructions, they could have been brought up on company charges of insubordination, hauled out of service, dragged into a hearing & then fired. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, who at least represented the Engineer, probably couldn’t even get these guys out of insubordination charges (insubordination is one of the big ones on the railroad, along with drug & alcohol violations and speeding).

The westbound grade on the Sherbrooke Subdivision out of Megantic through Laval-Nord to Nantes is one of the steepest grades east of Kicking Horse & Rogers Passes out west. Nantes & CN’s Longley hill between Grand Falls & Plaster Rock, NB (Napadogan Subdivision) are two of the steepest grades in eastern Canada.

Burkhardt seriously downplayed the entire disaster when addressing the Megantic townspeople, saying such disasters happen “all the time” on the railroad (NO they don’t). Then he proceeded to point the finger at everyone but himself. I’m surprised they lynch him on the spot.
