  Prune in the summer they say. The theory is in the summer, you take away its energy production. When you prune in the winter, all the reserved energy spurs a crazy return.

  This is true about the prolific (!) mulberry tree.  I had a holly tree that had a volunteer mulberry growing right next to the holly tree, touching even, but I didn't know it!  The holly tree died and then I discovered the trunk of what I later learned was a mulberry tree.  The trunk had been surrounded by the holly leaves and no branches of its own. I removed the holly without damaging the mulberry.  In ONE summer month the mulberry had completely filled out with branches and was unrecognizable.  It has lots of fruit one year later.  I just ate some. Ripe when the red turns black.

  Ty so much! We moved into a house with a very mistreated mulberry tree, and I'm trying to learn how to fix it properly, after the last "tree trimmer" butchered it. (he ended up being a landscaper that knew nothing about trees) So I want to learn how to care for this tree myself. Appreciate you!

  Thank you for the details ! We have one of these mulberry trees (second year now)) and didn’t know how to prune it. The shoots grew 10 feet or more straight up in the first year. Now spring is here and we want to do the right thing. Extremely helpful!

  I am planting a Persian black mulberry that can grow up to 30 feet.  I want to prune it for maximum fruit and about 15 feet tall.

  Since mulberries fruit pretty early in the spring, I’m undecided about how much to prune in the winter versus late spring after harvest. It seems like at least with the everbearing varieties, pruning after harvest encourages them to produce a second crop. With ANY variety, I will get more fruit if I wait to prune after the harvest, but that is harder on the tree than pruning during winter dormancy. 🤔 Anyone have opinions informed by experience with either method? I’m in the high desert of SoCal, USDA zone 9A, if that matters. My tree is grafted with Oscar, Jan’s Best (everbearing), Shangri-La and Black Pakistan.
