Thank you! Your clear explanations of where and why to prune is of great help to me. I have some dwarfs in pots but I planted two unknown ones in the ground and I don’t want to climb a tree every day to harvest! Mulberries are my favorite berry so I will put your advice to good use.

I believe that you said that the hormone Auxin would be flowing UP the stem to stimulate growth. In fact, Auxin is a growth inhibiter which flows DOWN from the top buds to inhibit growth below. So the tree grows taller. When you prune, as you do, you cut of the growth inhibiting Auxin from reaching the lower branches and so they develop as you intend.
