Dr K once said something that stuck with me forever (paraphrasing): Being kind to yourself when you deserve it is transactional. But true kindness starts when it is NOT deserved.

0:03 " The reason why it is so hard to love yourself is because you know you." Thank you. That is how to start a video.

Heavy on the "Self-love requires external validation" thing. If all you've ever known is exclusion, loving yourself would seem like deluding yourself.

"Learning self-love by yourself is hard."
I think that's the problem I'm dealing with. I'm in a place where I almost feel I need someone to show me I'm even worth loving in the first place. Because even if I tell myself I am, another part of me fires back with something like 'if that where the case, someone would.' And it's hard to get out of that rut.

I've found the "hey buddy" method to be very helpful. Rather than tearing myself down and having a litany of thoughts about how I'm failing and not good enough, I've managed to move toward a more supportive form of self-talk that is understanding and encouraging. "Hey buddy, I know this is tough and you feel awful right now, but we're gonna get through this and be better off for it." Rather than "What's wrong with you? Why can't you do this? Why are you like this?" It's kind of like trying to be a supportive parent to your inner child, rather than an abusive one.

I usually hate myself, and see myself as no value. The only times that changes is, when I help others, because helping others, makes me happy.

The real toxic part of "I have to love myself" is the statement of "I have to". The moment you change it into "I don't have to" and start to think about "what I want to" is the moment you learn self love.

"It's so much easier to simply be loved by someone else." Ah the good old chicken and egg problem. Raised and conditioned to have a lot of self criticism and hatred, which inhibits me from being loved by others, but is also that which I need to overcome self loathing so that I can love and be loved by others!

my take on the saying "you can't love others before loving yourself" means that you won't be able to maintain a healthy relationship with someone if you don't have a healthy one with yourself

I wish more people would understand that "make sure you are stable by yourself before you get into a relationship" does NOT mean to wait to form friendships. We are hard wired to need community. Isolating yourself is NOT the way forward. Men especially have been conditioned into not understanding this.

I'm 25 and have never seriously dated anyone. My life has been chaotic and I've had a ton of personal issues to work through. But through it all, my friends, family, and different communities I've been in are the only reason I've been able to move forward.
