Carl Palmer is criminally underrated by the average rock fans. Everyone talks about Bonham, Baker, Peart, Paice (a personal favorite of mine), Bruford, etc and rightfully so. But damn, Carl Palmer was killing it all while an entirely new genre of music was being created.

This piece has a long history. The main melody was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as Rondo a la Turk. Later, Dave Brubeck did a cover on his Take Five album called Blue Rondo a la Turk (circa 1955). About a decade later The Nice (led by Keith Emerson) recorded a new version called Blue Rondo. This version was adapted by ELP and was a staple in their live shows as Rondo. Usually it was at the very end of the concert. Typical of Emerson, in his version he incorporates elements of JS Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor. And, yes, the 19 year old Palmer is showing his jazz roots quoting not only Tony Williams, but also Max Roach and Buddy Rich.

Buddy Rich was greatly admired by drummers at the time, but Palmer went one step further: he introduced himself to him to discuss their mutual passion for percussion, and Car became good friends with Buddy's family. In fact, Carl even dated one of Buddy's daughters. Carl was certainly greatly influenced by Buddy. Carl was even nicknamed "Little Buddy."

And what makes this all the more impressive is that this is there 4th concert together as ELP. They just formed in April 1970, this is August 1970. And to top it off, Carl had just slammed one of his hands, can't remember which, I think it was his left, in an old heavy 1970 car door about 4 days prior to this and kept a bucket of ice water next to him during the whole performance that he kept dipping his hand in. AND HE'S ONLY 20!

The keyboard kept going because Emerson wedged some keys down by inserting daggers. I believe these particular daggers were ceremonial SS daggers given to him by Lemmy of Motörhead when he was roadying for Emerson’s previous band The Nice.

When Buddy Rich says you have the best hands in the genre of rock you must be doing it right.
