  I'm very glad you feel this way about her! She had the most incredible voice and many people don't know about them right now. I started playing them on my TV YouTube yesterday and I'm happy you found it to share. I hope more of their songs are played, I feel they're timeless. ❤

  The best female singer EVER!  She and her brother were the best duo of the 1970s and forever.  Richard, the unsung hero, wrote many of their hit songs,  arranged them, sang background vocals, and played keyboards like a classical pianist .  He knew exactly how to bring out the magic in Karen's stunning voice.

  Karen was also a virtuoso drummer.  She could play complex rhythms while singing with that angelic voice. WOW!

  Was blessed to see the Carpenters in concert in Johnstown, PA. Sold out venue. I'm 79 and count seeing them in concert as one of my favorite memories.

  Trust me you will want to investigate the deep tracks. I stopped counting their unique cuts when I got to 130. She felt and communicated every conceivable emotion intimately. Jazz, rock, country, 1930s nightclub, beatles covers. She also was a fine dancer and had an amazing stage presence displayed in their TV specials. She was funny and adorable on the Bob Hope special. Her duet with Ella Fitzgerald was a delight.

  My favorite of the Carpenter performances. The angelic vocals are enhanced by the instrumentation. When the French horns come in the sound is heavenly.

  The instrument you asked about is called a &quot;cabasa.&quot; You are right, it is not a tamborine, but it is in the family of percussion instruments with the tamborine. It is most clearly heard in the great classic song &quot;Stand By Me.&quot; I play several percussion instruments (Marimbas, xylophone, chimes, tympani, the cabasa, and others as well as the piano and have played the cabasa in a live perfornance of &quot;Stand By Me.&quot; It is not a technically difficult instrument but one must have an excellent sense of rhythm as the instrument is often used on the off-beat or rather than on the beat. If one is rhythmically challenged that is not the instrument to pick up. Precision is key.
