Imagine paying 6k for a job upfront, how do people even think that's a good idea?

Surprised that crew with experience fell for this, green staff are at risk if they are not informed properly, because it seems it was a very well put together scam.

I have now been targeted by fraudsters 3 times: bank fraud, invoice redirect and a fake holiday let. I spotted and avoided all three, but what surprised me was a) the effort and investment the fraudsters had made to create a fake story, this took time effort and resources and I feel sure this is organised crime, b) the naivety of organizations who could see this and prevent it, in one case a UK bank that allowed a scammer to open dozens of bank accounts then close them a week later, the legitimate holiday booking site hosting non-existent villas that disappear overnight and c) the complete disinterest of the Police and other agencies in doing any investigation. It feels like the wild west.

This is prevalent in the Oil & Gas industry as well, and probably many others. As the previous commenter wrote, hard rule, never pay for a job !!

In the current economic climate, the same thing is happening for 'normal' jobs outwith the maritime industry. Folks being 'headhunted' and asked to pay up front costs for all sorts of stuff. Due diligence is the name of the game but most younger folks don't see the need in this day and age. Interestingly 'David's' father saw the problems but wasn't listened to.
