  It is a privilege to hear a little of Lang Lang’s story from his experience as a child under such pressure and scrutiny. Thank God for the teacher who invited him to become more than a professional competitor! His feel for the music is utterly magical. Thank you for this interview. 💜

  This is one of the best interviews I've seen.  And I'm old!  Lang Lang is so personble, so likeable.  Around year 2000 I visited the Curtis Institute of Music to see another student recital (by artists unknown to me in advance... ... but the students are all so good).  On this evening the student played solo piano and the audience was surprisingly loud and animated, with girls screaming in delight and admiration.  These recitals normally had older audiences, reserved and quiet.  But this student pianist was Lang Lang.  I was really lucky to see him, and have followed him since then.  Thanks to Lang Lang, Tom Power and CBC for posting this terrific interview.

  There is an ancient Chinese saying 「千里馬常有, 而伯樂不常有」 translated as  ... "Talented horses are common, but discerning judges of horses are rare."  Talented students are lucky to find a good mentor.

  My daughter is a violinist who had a teacher.who treated her like a piece of furniture. She fell in wirh a teacher at Dusseldorf Robert Schumann Hohschule and her old teacher in Wuppertal made her choose. She chose Dusseldorf and got one of three places put of 100 applicants. She was forced by a bad teacher to risk everything. She is now very successful (if not stratospheric like the delightful Lang Lang), but how easy it is to destroy a talent and force kids to have to risk years and years of effort. It's always the second-raters who play these games.

  Lang Lang's rendition of Chopin's Etude Op 10 #3 on youtube really showed me a lot of what he is talking about here...he played that piece, especially the middle section, in a way that I've never heard before. He owned it
