Bruce Lee on the thumbnail as the face of traditional martial arts… he was one of the few that started questioning the wing chun masters and was shun out of the community. Then he trained in Boxing, Judo, Eskrima, Karate. He was the one quoted to say “take what is useful, throw away what is not”.

Attention to anyone watching, there is great CONTEXT AND NUANCE to what Josh Barnett says in the beginning. He doesn't outright dismiss all traditional martial arts.... he actually greatly respects them. If you've followed Barnett thru the years and know his Seattle origins, you'll understand what I mean. He's a deep thinker and you gotta read "between the lines" of what he's saying.

His Judo teacher Fred Sato is also directly connected to Bruce Lee's legacy in Seattle, as Bruce was friends with Fred and Jesse Glover (powerful Judoka and Bruce's first American student).

Because someone open a MC dojo doesn't make all the traditional arts Fake, Exist a lot of Serious Masters in Traditional Martial Arts they deserve respect.

Wow Josh with a bar right there, if your martial art can’t be used in combat then it’s essentially choreography

You’re basically having everyone on your channel. First Eric Paulson, now him. It’s awesome! Good job.

Josh is a very practical person and he makes a lot of valid points. Martial arts has 2 sides to the coin, "martial" (self preservation) and "arts" (self perfection). Not everyone can make the distinction and in the West we tend to focus mostly only on martial. I have studied both traditional and non-traditional martial arts for over 40 years and I enjoy them both. Yes, I have trained some BS stuff in my youth, but I have also trained some traditional Kung Fu that involved body conditioning, low stances and intensive physical workouts that gave me self confidence when I was young, a sense of accomplishment and perhaps most importantly, self discipline. Before lumping all traditional martial arts into one bucket, take a look at some of those old masters in their 80's and 90's and they can still squat down, still healthy, still vibrant, so I hope to be like them if God allows me to live that long. When I was a teenager Master Pan hit me in the chest with a short punch and it was the real deal (and I've trained with 2 high level boxing coaches in my lifetime, one who professional). In my mid 20's Ned Chan (Hung Gar) grabbed my chest with a tiger claw and his grip strength dropped me to my knees and I outweighed him by at least 50 pounds. Not all traditional martial arts is BS, but certainly Bruce was 100% correct in saying you have to absorb what is useful.
