Really appreciate all the love for this video; it got way more emotionally raw than I expected, and I seriously considered cutting some stuff out, but my thinking was that a portion of you reading this, statistically speaking, have gone through similar (or worse) -- and my opening up a bit might help you get through your day.

And besides, even if that's not the case, you get to laugh at the dumb city-boy Yank in his pajamas trying to look all ruggedly manly. So, hey, there's that.

Please keep your feedback, questions, suggestions, etc. coming! The American Highlander is a passion project I'm doing in my spare time, and I'm making it up as I go, so if there's something you want to see, let me know. I truly was not prepared for how much positive reception this channel has gotten; it seems to really resonate with a lot of people, which is amazing when you consider I'm just kind of an average middle-aged schlub and not some super-slick twentysomething guru influencer.

Sending love to you from the Highlands. If you get a chance to experience the Far North, do it -- it's amazing up here.

I can see how much you love Scotland! I was born in Scotland and moved with my family to California in 1981. My first wife passed away a few years ago and I remarried sometime later. but here is something you may not know. My daughter from my second marriage who was born here in the U.S came to me and said that as I was a Scottish citizen by birth, if I signed papers for her, she can move to the UK, no fees , full national health coverage etc. as if she was born in Scotland. I signed of course and she moved over to the Yorkshire area of UK a year ago with her English boyfriend, and she loves it over there. Thanks for posting your videos

I’m so happy to hear that you’ve found your place in life, particularly after having such a horrific time when you were little. You made a choice to be a survivor, rather than a victim of the past, and your determination to do so is incredible, and such a credit to you. Wishing you every happiness for your life in Scotland.

You can choose your friends but not your relatives and if they don't contribute to your happiness, then they are best left behind. Enjoy and take pleasure from the new friendships you will undoubtedly make.

I was inspired to leave the US for Scotland by Leith's folk singer Dick Gaughan. After he performed the previous night, we were having breakfast and he said, 'you can't know your own country until you leave it for a time and then turn around and look back'. That was my inspiration. It took me four years and I came through the British Universities/North American Club (BUNAC) by completing a university degree and then finding an employer willing to take me for the length of a student work exchange visa. Once I had worked the six months of that visa, I worked in Dublin under a similar scheme for four months, during which time my original Edinburgh employer had obtained a work permit for me to come back.
