How to Hit Topspin In Tennis with Power (Without Brushing Up)

This video tends to trigger some viewers who strongly believe that topspin should be taught as "brushing" the ball. While that phrasing might work with kids—who intuitively understand it and naturally stay loose—it often backfires with adults.

My content is always aimed at adult recreational players since they are the audience watching tennis instructional videos on Youtube, and adults tend to interpret instructions literally. When they hear "brush," they often stiffen up, kill their swing, and consciously try to lift the ball—losing all fluidity, wrist lag, and power in the process. The result? A mechanical, weak shot—exactly what I demonstrate in this video.

A perfect example of this kind of literal misunderstanding (and its solution) is explained by Trevor Noah in this interview with Ellen. Listen to the end — it’ll make you smile and think: https://youtu.be/37lqCgW1h9o?t=262

No nonsense. No annoying music. No obnoxious advert interruption. Just a man teaching you how to hit topspin like it says in the title. A perfect video. Chapeau.

This may be one of the best top spin instructions for rec players. Literally has changed everything for me. Love how you explain things.

Mixing 2 vectors is the art and Novak has done mastery of this. In a Time magzine video where the GOAT is teaching tennis and in that video he says that he generates the vertical vector using legs by slight more knee bend.

I've been playing tennis for 35 years and have awful groundstrokes. I always had the the "brush up" idea in my head but watching this made me realize I've fallen into the trap of focusing too much on the upward vector and not slapping/hitting THROUGH the ball. This video is super helpful!

I remember watching your videos months ago and thought that what you were saying was either obvious or simply a bunch of words with no visceral meaning to me. After hitting many sessions of drills, mock play, and listening to many YouTube instructors, my body finally understands what you are talking about at a physical level. My key checkpoints are 1 loose wrist through out the swing, 2 lag the racket before contact which imparts stability in the wrist, 3 swing starts from the slot position below the ball rising to meet the ball, 4 release of the laid back wrist through contact as the racket catches up with the wrist, 5 forward angled wind shield motion as the racket head passes the wrist, finish with the elbow bent and pointing to the direction of the ball. Of course there are also requirements for set up and take back including , positioning of the feet, loading of the legs, rotating the hips backwards and forwards, rotating of the shoulder, and on and on. Tennis is hard, but I love it

So true! Thank you. Once I started thinking of slapping instead of brushing I automatically got power, control and consistency. Way less balls going out of the court!
