Most people want peace, but aren’t ready to let go of what’s causing their suffering. That hit hard

In Sri Lanka these stages taught in schools and Sunday schools. And also it is in everyday conversational knowledge if any one talking about dhamma. I think Peter have narrated these knowledge beautifully. Its a quality work.

A year after meditating using an app, I attended my first retreat. It was a 12-day retreat under known Theravada teacher. A few days in to the retreat I noticed a buzzing in my hearing. Over the next few days, the buzzing propagated through other sense modalities: tingling sensation in the body and my vision started becoming pixelated. Halfway through the retreat during a Dharma talk all the chattering in my head ceased. There was only the sound of the teacher's voice and the people in the meditation hall, and the sights associated with them. After a while I noticed the "cessation" and I freaked out.

I experienced something similar to a panic attack. After calming down and trying to sleep my body started shaking, the tingling sensation in the body turned painful and patterns of light swam in my vision. After a while it stopped and it felt like the volume knob of my hearing was turned to max. Everything became loud and the buzzing in my ears became louder. The tingling in my body turned into and undulating sensation in my abdomen, accompanied by what is best described as vibrating bubbles going up from my abdomen into my head. My vision became pixelated. The most jarring effect was looking myself into the mirror and feeling nothing. I knew I was looking at myself, but there was no connection/feeling to my reflection in the mirror. This was accompanied by months of nightmares. One of the most vivid ones was looking at myself being run over by a truck, seeing my body shatter into pieces and watching my eyes inside my shattered skull looking back at me.

What followed were several years of instability, getting used to my perception changing all the time. The changes are akin to cycles. You get used to the new normal and suddenly it changes. It took years of practice to get used to everything changing all the time. The issue for me has been the "flatness" that arose as part of the changes. I had issues enjoying things I used to enjoy. The big difference was that it became easier to interact with people. It's easier to pay attention and not be thinking about a reply as I listen. I don't react as I used to people being rude or annoying. I stated enjoying simple things more. The biggest insight I had was that the less of me there is, the easier it became to live in the world. There are other peculiarities that were accentuated by the changes, but that's a subject for another comment.

I still have a long way to go and that's why I continue practicing. If you decide to practice, find a group run by a teacher that knows how to handle the awkward stages (I was lucky in this area). The techniques work, that's why there is a point of no return.

as long as Buddhists are still hung up on the thought of:
"I am a Buddhist!" (identity view)
"there are certain 'Buddhist-looking' things I must do!" (attachment to ritual)
"because I need some consolation that I'm doing the right thing." (doubt)
then they'll never reach Stage 1.

Therefore, in order to be able to reach enlightenment, one must stop trying to "be Buddhist" (or be a follower of any religion for that matter),
... and engage directly with the path of awakening.

Sadu, Sadu, Sadu🎉

Very thoughtful and detail video on the 4 stages of enlightenment.

I think that Elder Ananda finally reach Arahatship after Lord Buddha death, us because he finally let go which is the finally training at stage 4, which honestly is very hard as he always been beside Lord Buddha. And we remember him by "Thus, have I heard". ❤
