Take a trip to West Mineral, Kansas, USA. That is where the "Big Brutus Museum" is. Bucyrus Erie's (now "Caterpillar Global Mining") other "world's largest", Big Brutus lies there. Super cool! I happened to be working locally in Galena, Kansas and a machinist there recommended checking it out. The world's largest "electric power shovel". It's on display where it last worked. You can tour the entire outside and inside, and answer a lot of questions you yourself, or others are wondering after not explaining very well how 3 phase AC power is converted to use inside this giant, "The Big Muskie". Massive AC motors are powered to be generators for ALL of the rest of the machine's motions, which are DC motor driven. Back then, DC motors were the only source for precise major torque and HP control. The only bummer is, motors have a LOT of copper, so the generators and all of the motors have been removed, but you can imagine how big they all were, see where they were mounted, and can tell what work they were doing because all of the gearboxes and winches are still there. And you can sit in the operator's chair, put hands on the joysticks and switches, and see WTF they were seeing! I hope you get a chance to see it! Fortunately this was not cut to pieces and scrapped! Don't go to the water. It's not a beach, it's a 70 foot drop off straight down!..the reach of the bucket!
