  Hard drives are perhaps rated for 8 to 10 years, but they may also fail at any time. Especially if subjected to excessive vibrations, heat, or poor handling. Or just a power surge. If you have all drives from the same batch too, they may have a similar fault that might have two or more drives fail at the ‘same time’, or typically during the resilvering process after one drive fails. It’s soul crushing when that happens. Even with raid 1, that is unrecoverable.<br><br>I self-host all I can too and have for years, but taking photos as an example, I keep the original high quality versions on my server and accessible through Immich, and let Google compress and keep a lower quality version. Self-hosting is great, but there are also risks in putting all your eggs in one basket.<br><br>Stay safe and keep it up! Next on the agenda is an off-site backup server, I reckon :p

  I don&apos;t want to be that guy, but if you&apos;re running your entire life off the NAS, you really should have redundancy drives instead of 48T of storage.

  It was almost 20 years ago that I used a huge USB hard drive, Handbrake, and hosted hundreds of movies in an iTunes library.<br><br>In the end it got too annoying though so I just ended up taking the physical media off the shelf every time 😂

  If you do it like this without offsite Backups (no matter if it is a remote storage or you put backup hard drives at a friends house) you create a single point of failure for all of your data. Everyone who thinks this is ok can do it like this but you should be aware of the problem.<br>Or in other words if this is your only storage you should be Ok with everything gone if your house burns down
