Are variant covers worth the money?

  Regarding the idea at the end, a 3-issue miniseries with interior art by Artgerm would sell like C R A Z Y. <br><br>Of course, every panel would have to be the character looking forward... but they could write around that.

  As a published Comics artist of many years, what the variants do for me and several of my peers, is that it does give us additional income in a profession that is quick to toss us asside. This being said, from the perspective you give, I totally agree. From the side of the comics artist that need to eat? What ideas? Not all of us are Art Adams or Jim Lee but we have worked really hard.

  Variant covers remind me of the 90’s where they flooded the market with them. <br>It wasn’t sustainable.

  I stopped going to comic shops because the variant covers made it harder for me to keep track of what I already have and do not from a series. It is just easier to buy trades and omnibuses. <br><br>I totally agree with the idea of making special edition art books over the flood of variant cover single issues.

  I just bought a book like that from a Dynamite IndieGoGo campaign, I got it 2 weeks ago. It was a book with all different Vampirella art &amp; covers.

  I&apos;ve only bought variants if I like the artwork. And I never pay more than $10. &nbsp;But I get them for me, &nbsp;not for investment. <br><br>Unless it&apos;s a rare variant by a popular artist or the 1st appearance on the cover of a popular character I don&apos;t think variants are all that hot on the secondary market.

  I generally only buy variants of the series I am really in love with. Not with the idea that they are going to become a hot book but more to assuage the &quot;collector&quot; in me.

  Variant covers, events, reboots, etc. - all the crap that became big in the 90s - are a big part of what&apos;s wrong with the Big Two.

  DC does make poster books for some of their artist covers which is a nice way of getting the art minus the actual comic. &nbsp;There&apos;s so many good variants that you&apos;d go broke getting them. &nbsp;I&apos;ll find a high res version and download it for my phone.

  I am suspicious with ratio covers because a lot of online retailers slash their prices down. I&apos;ve see 1:100 variants sell for almost half it&apos;s initial price. Some youtubers have back tracked the performance of previous issues and compared their originals to the variants and there seems to be a pattern that key issues introducing a new character or major plot tends to be move valuable but for regular non-key issues the original tends to hold value while the variant covers tend to depreciate or not keep pace with the original. I&apos;m not sure about virgin variant covers but it seems like people like to buy them at comic conventions depending on the artist and what the cover is depicting.

  I appreciate the McFarlane method for variants. Each Spawn title has two, maybe three covers, all $3.99 &amp; cardstock.

  The variant B covers from DC are much nicer than the regular covers, they look so much better with the tiny logo &amp; very little writing.
