Why don't creators seem to care about piracy?

What I do is I’ll read a comic on a pirate site that I have an interest in and if I like the first issue I’ll go to the comic book store and subscribe to the series or buy the graphic novel version

Honestly after Amazon setting digital comics back years and ruining years of work by all of the publishers and ComiXology, Marvel and DC should just go day and date w their subscription releases. Have “pay” and “free(w ads)” options and call it a day.

I have a friend who pirates Manga all the time. But if it’s a really good series which it usually is he goes ahead and buys a physical copy

Yeah, i did pirate some comics a long time ago (15 years or so). Back then, since i don't live in US, i didn't know how to get my hands on american comics. It was never a question about the pricetag. It was a question about availability. As soon as i figured it out, i stopped (much more fun with physical comics)
The only reason i would do it again, is if a certain comic wasn't avaiable in any other way. Which means it probably must be an older comic that has not been published in some kind of collected edition, i guess.

I've pirated comics in the past when I bought them online and wasn't allowed to download them to my own drive. Good thing I did because those official sites stopped posting those older issues or required me to pay monthly subscription fees to read the books. I also pirated a couple when the publisher suddenly said the physical copies won't be for sale and the missing 1 issue was online only. Paid and did the download there too.

Just a thought - how is piracy different than selling back issues?

To a creator I mean.

They see no money from either transaction.

some are also out of print too. for years I was trying to find a physical edition of storm vol 1 by Greg pak (I got it recently) but going online I could easily find a digital version through backdoor sites vs a physical version

Playing devil's advocate: if the industry's business model is largely predicated on variant covers and collectors, then does it really matter if the contents are pirated?

Piracy would only be a danger to a business that is dependent on readers, readers who are ready to read through a large amount of material in one time, but would like to do so at a fair price and with relatively easy access. Are US comics a good deal for readers?

That and I don't want to pay for God knows how much money for old comics, cartoons, and videogames. Most of which isn't even legally pheasible to find as well

It's interesting that in Europe (specifically France, that I know well) piracy seems to be much less common, except for.. US comics. It's definitely harder to find CBRs or PDFs of french comics... until they come out in english, via Europe Comics and immediately turn up at Get Comics, or wherever.

Also, 2020 was a record year for french comics (!), and 2021 was almost as good.
