  As a therapist with a doctorate, I think it is important to clarify that psychosis is rarely as obvious or chaotic as television portrays it. Psychosis can occur in several conditions, including bipolar disorder or major depression with psychotic features, and a person may appear articulate, organized, and aware of their surroundings while simultaneously experiencing hallucinations, delusions, or a profoundly distorted understanding of reality.<br><br>A person experiencing psychosis may still hold a conversation, follow directions, make plans, and carry out purposeful actions. The presence of planning does not, by itself, rule out psychosis. The more clinically relevant question is whether the person’s decisions and actions were being driven by delusional beliefs, command hallucinations, or another severe distortion of reality.<br><br>That does not determine Lindsay Clancy’s legal responsibility, and none of us outside the courtroom has access to the full clinical record or expert evaluations. But it is inaccurate to assume that someone could not have been psychotic simply because they appeared calm, coherent, or capable of planning.

  Bipolar for 26 years. One psychotic episode that began like the flip of a switch. One minute I was fine, the next I was setting a fire. Everything turned out OK but my boss convinced me to self-admit to the MH facility and I did. I get tired &nbsp;and frustrated advocating for myself over and over and over, it&apos;s exhausting. Our system is so broken. P.S. I&apos;m on numerous meds that I take regularly and have been stable for years. I&apos;m reserving judgement in this case but I appreciate the dialogue it&apos;s generating.

  Her rational behavior while in a psychotic state is referred to as “double book keeping” in psychiatry. &nbsp;It’s not always one way or the other way. &nbsp;Some people with psychosis can hear voices and have demand hallucinations, while still being able to discuss routine tasks. It’s a phenomenon that is fairly common with mental health patients experiencing psychosis.

  As a mother that suffered from PPD, it is brutal. It&apos;s life changing, scary and I definitely questioned my sanity and was afraid to speak up to family because I didn&apos;t know how they would react or if I would be punished. I know now that my family would have been supportive and not judgemental - but I couldn&apos;t reach that logic while I was experiencing it.

  I’m a former L&amp;D nurse and I have been invested in this case since I first heard about it in 2023. It is devastating! I am very interested to see what the mental health experts will say. The problem is even “regular” mental health experts aren’t necessarily experts with post partum mental health, and take all the shifts in hormones into consideration when prescribing and treating patients on the verge of post partum psychosis. There is also a massive lack of specialty centers for post partum depression in the nation. At this time, I feel like it is 100% possible that she had a moment of psychosis when she did this.

  People in psychosis aren&apos;t walking around drooling and unable to speak. It&apos;s infuriating that the CW literally doesn&apos;t care about reality of PPD and PPP.

  Often people with severe depression will complete sui- during a period of elevated mood, more energy. They have been stuck with these thoughts and finally have the energy/ motivation to carry them out. It’s common. So when they keep saying she was having a really good day, it actually fits with severe depression/ psychosis

  I remember a doctor prescribed a steroid, prednisone , to my husband for something and within an hour he reacted with so much anger and rage for no reason. He literally left the house for fear of hurting me or our young children. Such a scary night! I called the pharmacist and asked about it and was advised to stop taking it and always list as a medication he is allergic to. I know first hand a medication can make you go crazy. I understand Whitney’s feelings and if you’ve never seen it or experienced it I’m not sure you can understand it. Praying the jury has discernment of truth! My heart breaks for this family.
