  I find myself crying at night over the best friends I had as a kid, at every stage of my life, who eventually just faded away. That feeling hits deep. Stand by Me captures it perfectly.

  It wouldn’t have even been called PTSD for Teddy’s dad. “Battle fatigue” was most likely. Huge stigma around it and they’d be “treated” with lobotomies or electroshock. <br><br>In the story, we actually hear about the night he snapped. He burned off Teddy’s ear and the neighbor called the police. When the cops got there, the dad was talking like he was in battle, saying how the enemy was closing in and the officer was actually sympathetic and went along with the delusion to keep him calm, asking if he thought he could hold things down a little longer. Teddy’s dad said he could and everything stayed calm until the people arrived to take him to the mental hospital.<br><br>Not being able to cope with war and going crazy from it would have carried the social stigma of being “unmanly.” Except by others who’d been through it. Teddy absolutely would have been bullied for it and adult bullies used to get away with everything back in the day.
