Why are you so obsessed with race?

My family is 100% German, but in Wisconsin some of my cousins changed their names to look English.
My surname is 'Brechbühl' and my cousins changed it to 'Brookfield'.

It's hard to talk about the "who was White or not" thing at that time without bringing in the Protestant/ Catholic divide into it. People really want to to look at the past with modern eyes but you really have to put yourself in that world at that time to understand all the complexities.

Hi Danielle! Thanks for the video. I have a funny (but also sad) story for you. When I was in college and I was in a required philosophy class; during one of the discussions I called people of European ancestry European American and the whole class including our professor were in an uproar over it. The professor asked did I mean "white people?" I told him that everyone with European ancestry, whether they admitted to it or not ancestors came from one of the countries that are apart of what we know as Europe. I felt they must hate their ancestry for reacting the way they did at that time.🤔

I'm Scottish, Irish, Polish and Slovakian with trace amounts of Native American, English, German and Lithuanian. As far as I'm concerned, I'm Celtic-Slavic mixed race. The whole "changing names to sound more American and fit in" is definitely a thing. My great grandpa came to America from Poland, worked in the coal mines, and changed the family name from Tracz to Tracy to fit in.

Great video! 1905, a lot of immigration from Norway and Sweden when the crowns divided. War was on the horizon, but the real "local" guys didn't want to fight their cousins. Thus they left.

This is a very informative video. I think you did a great job to explain that the "white" term in America causes us to put distance between our current selves and our ancestral roots. Well done!

When I traveled to Europe and met people in various countries (England, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain and Greece) they always ask about my family origins. I am obviously "white" and from the USA, but that information isn't enough for Europeans to really understand what our origins are. I was really surprised when I met some people in the Netherlands and before I told them that my family had Sicilian roots, they TOLD me that I look like I am from Sicily! Europeans are much more in tune with the origins and characteristics of the various people who originated in Europe.

After experiencing what I did while visiting Europe I completely understand what you are hoping to convey to your viewers and encourage them to explore more about their family history and origin.

See that stretch of German crossing Missouri horizontally with English on either side? That follows the Missouri River and has been known as Missouri Rhineland since the 1800s.

Also, European does not automatically equal pale-skin.
