Not a fan XJ40 paltform but own a '86 Jaguar XJ6 and an '89 Mercedes 300sel. I love both for similar reasons and a few unique reasons.
Overall the my '89 300sel W126 Mercedes with the M103 i6 is a masterpiece, great performace/durability, rock steady at high speeds but the jaguar is nimble and lighter.
At the end the day, I drive my Mercedes hard and she takes it with a smile while the XJ6 I handle with kitten gloves. Im very aware of the Shortcomings of 80s Jaguar but i sill love my series III xj6 and its a cream puff w/ low miles but the w126 is definitely the better car.
Cheers! Thanks for the great review

My aunt had a W126 560SEL. Outstanding car that was built like a tank. Whenever I drove it I felt like a sultan.

We owned a 1987 Mercedes 560 SEC for 15 years. Brilliant car. Bought with 43,000 miles on the clock, we ran it up to 99,000 miles. Sold it last year, to a collector, still in gorgeous condition, for more than we paid for it. Best car ever!

As a owner of a 1994 jaguar XJ40 4.0 gold, i can confidently say, that it is a truly amazing vehicle. It is beautiful from every angle. The interior is high quality connolly leather, nice and classy. And the straight six runs so smooth, and can also provide the power and speed if needed.
Two things i absolutely adore about driving it, is the super easy and soft handling, and absolute perfect suspension for a big luxury saloon. With dual wishbone absorbers it feels like a floating carpet, ignoring any uneven surfaces in the road.

A tidy w126 is such an elegant car.

I would take the XJ but them I'm biased. My Dad was one of the engineers on the project so I had a front row seat of its development. I remember the first quarter scale models, the first time the prototype fired into life at Browns Lane, the industry launch at One Bird Cage Walk in London and the car was flipped on its side to get through the front door. Its amazing the car was even launched in 1986. To answer your question the first drawings started in 1977 for the series three replacement.

I was a teen in the 80s and my parents owned both, dad an ‘87 560SEL, mother an ‘88 XJ6. Her weekender was an ‘87 560SL but the Jag was in the shop so much that she drove the SL mostly. I loved that Jag, it was a special machine, very different from the German cars and the girls I took on dates in it always loved it, too. In adulthood I’ve owned many Mercedes, but I had an ‘07 XK8 then a ‘10 XKR convertible - both were bulletproof and I loved them like the XJ from my youth. I drive S-Classes and SLs almost exclusively now but I have some fond memories of my Jags, and I hate what the company appears to be evolving into. C’est la vie.
