Hey, from New Orleans, born and raised. Traditionally, shot gun houses have the kitchen at the very back with a door to the back. Bedrooms and bathrooms in the middle to retain heat in the winters. Living room in the front.

I feel like if you add a bedroom/a sim you can increase the budget by $2k

for starter homes you should just do under $20k for budget!! i get sticking to the original but it might be too hard to stick to exactly $13k while also refreshing it

I am loving these refreshes. I think it's fine to increase the budget on these houses as long as you keep them under the $20K starter threshold.

As a player, I don't think you should be afraid of a second living space, even in a small home, even with limited budgets!
I know that I personally love it when starter homes have an emptier not-bedroom: Sims skillbuilding items are big, and it's really nice when playing with a starting budget to have space for them without needing to undo the whole living room you've already paid for. A study with a couple of basics and an obviously empty 2x2-ish space make adding what you need for your play-through specifically really easy, and the room is then also easy to convert into a baby room while saving up to a 40-60k family home.

I don't mind if it's more expensive than the original if I'm still able to play with the house as a starter one. It does make sense that the house costs more if it's better than what we had before, like the EA refresh.

I think you should definitely remake the Goth's neighborhood next... Their house is so detailed, while the other ones are some of the worst in the game... So big and empty.

Much love from New Orleans! I’ve been loving this series and it’s great to see it expand to Willow Creek too!
If it’s helpful for the rest of the neighborhood, a common way for this style of shotgun house to expand is building a second story we call a “camelback” rather than toward the side. So happy you worked so hard to get that shotgun floorplan in the end too. It’s near and dear to my heart ❤
Edited to add that we do have ALOT of tile and brick in our architecture, but little to no stone because there’s no stone present in soft river soil here, making it all imported and much more expensive.

I'd love to see you refresh some of the community lots as well as the homes

If you reduce the height of the foundation, you end up paying less for stairs.
