Mace Tyrell wrote the letter knowing that it would draw Jon out of the wall to die - another tactically brilliant move by Mace the Ace to remove a potential threat against his Warden in the North and further evidence that he is the puppet master pulling the strings in a way that Varys or Littlefinger could only dream of.
