As a young nurse in Chesterfield I received a prize from the Duchess of Devonshire. Only later did I know she was Deborah, a Mitford. I still have her pi cture shaking my hand

Whomever wrote the script for this, did a brilliant job. The descriptions of the times and the people who lived through those turbulent decades captured it with both wit and empathy. Very well done!

I went for a walk with my kids years ago near Petworth house.
We came across a grand mansion that was boarded up.
I had a strange feeling about it and it was very unusual.
I later found out it was a house owned by the Mitfords.

This should be a miniseries in PBS. Your telling was impeccable. Thank you.

You have a rare gift for treating the women you document as the humans they are, instead of as simple heroines or villainesses.

I'm a little over halfway through. What a story! An old family, but not wealthy. Connected, yet not powerful. And these sisters placed themselves in the most trying circumstances. Living through extreme global upheaval like so many of these women.

I really enjoyed the reciting of this story. I come from a family of 7 girls. I can see some of the same personality clashes between sisters but in the end we all still love each other. We are now in our sixties and seventies.

Those parents had a lot to do with their “morals”. The infighting, teasing, bullying, attention seeking, prejudices etc.

The Mitford sisters were quintessentially British upper class women. Raised to be free thinkers, for better or worse they chose their battles. Coming of age at time when the world was being pulled apart by ideals, fear, nationalism and xenophobia, the sisters, just one family chose to Allie themselves with the best and worst of their time. I don’t agree with the far right fervour of Diana and Unity but as a person living today, I do understand how extreme policy can rip apart family.
