One of those movies inspired by Rebecca, and so Jane Eyre; to some very closely matching detail. There is a bolder interest here, however, on the psychoanalytical complexes of the main male character; as these complexes are revealed, so the story develops; and as they are resolved (in a climax), so is the story. So the somewhat Lynchean detours in the story-telling process, giving the movie some historical value, as well. There is also some interesting writing in the narrative and dialogue, such as the description of someone's "enamelled" countenance, and of what happened to the party "when Nature joined the conversation". It was also interesting to see the pairing of Redgrave and Bennett; they worked well together from the start --- helped along, somewhat eerily, because Bennett quite often looked very much like Margret Lockwood; the pairing of Redgrave and Lockwood in The Lady Vanishes often being called to mind.

What an excellent movie! And the background music was incredible too. If real life had a soundtrack like that, I'd be constantly terrified 😅
