  I often think about if Ashman had lived, the things the Ashman/Menken partnership would have done, and it's hard to accept that we never got them.  Menken of course has been quite successful and worked with a variety of lyricists in the aftermath, but I truly believe we would say Ashman/Menken in the same breath as Rogers/Hammerstein, the Gershwins, or the Sherman Brothers had they been able to keep working together all these years.

  This is one of the less-considered consequences of the "lone genius" archetype. Williams is seemingly one of the most renowned technical animators of all time, and also has a gift for teaching. That is an incredible legacy, and treating him as first and foremost maligned and washed because he didn't continue being a big feature animator/director type is almost insulting.

  As a self described animation nerd...<br>Yeah, I definitely think your read of The Thief and the Cobbler is spot on: even if he had been given infinite time and reseources, it would never have come together into a cohesive whole.<br><br>Even if the animation is gorgeously complex, there&apos;s just not a lot of narrative meat on them bones for critics and audiences to latch onto.

  I’m reminded of Miniminuteman’s very relevant saying: “Why make up an imaginary shadow government to hate when you can hate the actual government?”<br><br>Hate Disney, by all means, but at least hate them for the evil things they are actually doing/have done!

  honestly it sounds like Richard should have <br>a) done something like fantasia, where the focus is on the animation <br>or b) have a main writer who could help bring his visin to life more cohesively

  the fact that they didn&apos;t know robin williams would play the genie... reminds me of that quote about casting that&apos;s like &quot;casting a movie is like trying to find the guy who committed a murder. you go through a bunch of candidates who seem plausible but sometimes one guy will walk in with blood on his hands&quot;

  It&apos;s cathartic to hear someone who will reach such a large audience saying more or less what I&apos;ve felt about Williams for years. &nbsp;He was one of the best animators to have ever lived (though I think he&apos;d staunchly give the top credit to Kahl, who Williams adored as a friend and artist) BUT he wasn&apos;t a great storyteller when left to his own devices. &nbsp;Roger Rabbit IS his best because of the limitations he had to work within, and you can feel his perfectionism (within boundaries) elevating every frame of that movie into a master class in animation AND storytelling. <br>Admitting that Williams was a phenom animator but wasn&apos;t the same tier in his other ventures should be about as uncontroversial as acknowledging an Olympian in gymnastics is also not likely to be an Olympian figure skater. &nbsp;He has an incredible legacy, especially in terms of his teaching, which still touches every animator today, and he doesn&apos;t need the &quot;help&quot; of petty made-up dramas to keep that legacy alive. &nbsp;He WAS one of the greatest animators to have ever lived. &nbsp;Isn&apos;t that enough?
