42 and played the same 6 chords for 30 years, but now I’m training my finger to operate independently , learning new chords, trying to pick faster playing to a metronome, coming up with unique cord, arrangements, and lead guitar melodies … I have grown more in the last two years than in the last 30 years

Years ago my guitar teacher was getting me to learn to transcribe. I sucked, I couldn't do it. I told him I'd never be able to do it. He said to keep trying. One day, a few hous before my lesson, I was listening to Marilyn Manson's Holywood CD. On track to I heard the guitarist playing a riff and thought "I know what he's doing". I sat down, played it, wrote it down, then figured the song out. An hour or so later I'd transcribed the entire album. 😮😊

Rule #0 = Don't put your guitar in a case when not in use. Use a stand or wall hanger. If you care more about protecting your guitar than playing it, then you've already lost.

What helps me the most is never putting my guitar in its case. I have a $200 guitar, but I keep it on a guitar stand instead of worrying about it getting a scratch and being exposed to low humidity. It's always close at hand to pick up whenever I have an idea or want to practice. I have it near where I sit, so I don't have to get up to pick it up.
When doing computer work, I can take a short break and play for 10 or 15 minutes. It also allows me to have many short 15 - 20-minute practice sessions instead of relying on one long practice during the day.

I started guitar 2 and a half years ago, a couple months shy of my 62nd birthday. Last Saturday the music store where I take lessons held a "student showcase" (like a school recital but with adult beverages) where I performed in public for the first time. For the month before that I promised myself not to miss a day pf practice, even while traveling. A week later, I still have not missed a day. Only now it feels like a choice, not a chore. And having reached that goal, my teacher and I sat down for our weekly lesson and set a new goal. My next big goal is to be ready for the 6 day guitar camp I'm going to next summer.
