Get that old backpack out of the garage. Grab some plastic bags and fill with soil or sand. Put on the headphones, walk and enjoy.

The strongest and healthiest I’ve ever felt was after backpacking 800 miles in 8 weeks across New Mexico on the Continental Divide Trail - basically rucking 15-20 miles a day. Rucking is an amazing exercise for your health - it’s intuitive, simple, and you can make a fun adventure out of it even if just walking around your neighborhood!

I’m 61 and I do about 11 miles per week with a 60 lb Alice pack and a 25 lb kettlebell alternated between each hand during the ruck. I do 2-3 miles per ruck. A little over an hour 3-4 times a week. Best shape I’ve ever been in. Started with 20 lb vest and worked my way up. You certainly can hurt yourself doing too much too quickly. I highly recommend it though!

I have been using backpacks for everyday usage for decades. Less systematic but I think consistency is more important than perfection. I am definitely more fit than most people my age.

I Ruck, run and gym. For periods of time, I did each one independently to the extreme. Now for the last year and some months I have combined all of it together. I do slow long runs of 20km plus, Hill Repeats, long hilly runs, fast 5k's, zone 2 runs , zone 5 runs, interval training, work out atleast ones a week mostly twice. I ruck atleast ones a week, 20k fast 5k, up and down long stairways. Doing a variety of diffrent exercises have given me the most benefits. My 5k speed is getting faster my long runs is easier. For me doing a variety of diffrent things has made me stronger in all facets, running, rucking and lifting. Just doing one thing works for a while but then you plato. I used to be stuck in just zone 2 and it worked but my progress also stopped after a while. One thing I have not done yet, but starting soon is speed work. Variety is the spice of life.....

I ruck near daily. To get a clear idea of the difference of the weight distribution effect of the pack vs. the vest, simply do some squats in each and compare. You will feel that when wearing the vest there is a whole other level of force you must contend with to keep upright during the squat. This is what you are dealing with over a long duration in a rucksack vs a vest.

Both are great though so use what you have/what you can tolerate.

Fill a plastic bag with dry sand weight personal preference and cover completely with sniper tape. Keep weight in top of backpack and cinch all straps tight. I started by walking up and down a steep hill for 1 hour 3 x week after about 6 weeks my breathing & overall fitness health improved dramatically. Reps and pace will improve naturally!

There's a parking garage near me that's 9 stories high, and each one has a 15% incline hill included. So this is a great place to go rucking.

Each trip from bottom to top is around a mile. So I'll go there 2-3x per week and hike the whole thing 3-4x in my 50lb weight vest. It's low impact but surprisingly intense and a great option for zone 2 cardio.

I wore a "vest" for 20 years and a "weight belt" for 20 years. And I did a whole bunch of "walking" and "sprinting" in them. Also I did many other types of "resistance" exercises in my "vest" and "weight belt". The are NOT great for your breathing, core temperature, or lower back health. I highly recommend the backpack for so many reasons. Get one with good comfort. If you plan to carry a good amount of extra weight, get one with hip engagement.
