Thank you Simon for showing the way and having this wonderful guest. Loving to geek out with y'all 😂
I went to my new cardiologist and i brought up that I could change my diet, and he told me not to worry about it. 😂 Since seeing him I had comprehensive testing done and the underlying issue fir me turns out to be thyroid. The AHA guidelines have documented this.
Neither my primary care physician or cardiologist have spoken to me about diet.
I was on a whole food omnivore diet using all "good" fats olive oil, ghee, butter, coconut oil and targeting proteins at 100 grams.
My cholesterol was high - LDL 183, not outrageous, but there were other tests on the edge too, A1C at 5.9 --- so I've adopted the portfolio diet the best I can, removing all saturated fats, including the ghee.Including fermented foods, the gut has improved, eating 30 different plant foods weekly. Slowly increasing fiber, up to 40 grams daily. I am still titrating up on the thyroid meds, it's been slow -- about 5 months now -- I will plan to get the next comprehensive tests done once my TSH gets in range. The metabolic measures and lipids are impacted by the thyroid, this is my reasoning for the waiting on the tests.
I find the providers quite myopic in their approach. Although it's really the stingy insurance companies. I'm not a millionaire like Simon 😉 selling probiotics online with Dr Will.
My NP only wants to order the TSH -- while for most healthy 30 to 40 year olds, this would be fine. But I am 68 with AFIB, which warrants tracking T3 T4 too.
So I write memos to my file based on research and get the T3 T4 tested too.

I reduced my ldl from 271 to 80 through diet alone, switching from a pescatarian keto to a low-fat vegan diet...

Dietary cholesterol accounts to around 15% of the total blood cholesterol. There is a 20-25% population that are hyper absorbers of dietary cholesterol in the gut. Dietary changes can definitely help this group and others too, but may not help get off statins if you are not in this group

I do the Portfolio Diet for about half my meals. In about 3 months, my LDL went from 168 to 113 so down 32%. My total cholesterol went from 283 to 206 so down 27% and triglycerides from 105 to 60 so down 57! No meds! This diet works! It’s great you are spreading the word. Too many go on Statins right away instead of trying with foods first.

If you have stubborn cholesterol try Dr. Greger's LDL cholesterol lowering protocol re his new book. Brilliant results for my husband. Best lifetime blood tests at aged 75.

How many people actually change their diet and exercise more when the cardiologist suggests it? I suspect not many. I didn’t for years. I do now, but more on my own than because any doctor recommended it.

I've eaten most of the foods on the portfolio diet on a regular basis for years. In addition, I've been on a PCSK9i for some time and have maintained an LDL in the 50s. However, lately I've been eating a LOT of nuts/seeds/olive oil/avocados as well as some low fat dairy like kefir. I was concerned that this increase in fat (even plant fat is partially saturated) would have a negative effect on my lipids but I got results today and my LDL is 50. All that dietary fat did not increase my LDL. I think that the proponents of a very low fat diet are off course. The research points in a different direction... and so does this N of 1.
