Reminds me of the difference between rugby and NFL athletes. The sports look so similar but the athletes are very different because of the endurance requirements.

CrossFit has much more of a focus on moving heavy weights. Hyrox is mostly endurance. People taking about PEDs don’t understand that people from both sports can use PEDs but ultimately training and nutrition will result in different builds

Would we expect anything different? It’s like doing an endurance oriented crossfit workout….for every workout.

Hyrox is basically CrossFit Endurance for the masses 😂 CF came out with an endurance focused version that involved longer workouts. It’s the opposite of CrossFit Football, which was for power athletes with shorter and heavier workouts.

I do both CrossFit and Hyrox training depending on schedule, though I'm pretty far from an elite athlete. If you're not out to win anything against anybody else, it matters very little as most exercises are just the same and you can find a balance between pure strength and endurance depending on your own mood that day. Unless you are an elite athlete, I don't think it makes sense to optimise too much and just keep on moving the way you like best.

So if I’m understanding this correctly, bigger fibers can have more capillaries around them simply because there’s more perimeter to fit them on. But the area grows faster than the perimeter, so the ratio actually gets worse the bigger the fiber gets. Oxygen has to travel further to the center with not enough capillaries to compensate.
So here’s what I’m curious about, if you spent a year or two building muscle while doing consistent cardio, you’d grow capillaries around larger fibers. Then you cut down. Fibers shrink, but capillaries don’t disappear at the same rate. You’d end up with smaller fibers that have more capillaries surrounding them than someone who just trained lean the whole time. Essentially cheating your way to better capillarization than cardio alone would get you.
The myonuclei in the muscle fibers seem relevant here too. Those stick around after you lose muscle, so rebuilding is much faster the second time. So theoretically you could build big in the offseason, get into cardio shape at that size, cut for race season with capillary density above what you’d normally have, compete, then rebuild quickly.
Is there any research on deliberately cutting down as a strategy to maximize capillary density? I have no idea if this has been tested but after watching this, it seems like a fascinating experiment and I’d love to know lol.

I just found your channel the other day and I’m loving the content! Thanks for explaining everything and scratching my itch for exercise science!

I never did either but hyrox sounds better for most people imo. Conditioning/endurance with a little strength training is better for people’s health than amteur weightlifting with some endurance.

I like your justification for BMI. It's obviously not a perfect catch-all idea, but a good generalization in my limited knowledge and experience. I also like that you were willing to challenge the hypothesis. While smaller muscles lead to more surface area for the capillaries to diffuse oxygen, we all know there's more to exercise than just oxygen. I'm willing to bet that the larger muscles give an advantage in some form of transforming glucose or glycogen into usable energy better, and while oxygen is a large component of all this, we can't neglect the ATP production (and the various ways it can be done) among other possible things. This was great and exciting stuff to listen to. Thank you for putting it out there. I had no idea Hyrox even existed before this video.
